Ruger P97 or P345?

Gents,

I am wanting a commander sized double action 45. Something light and very reliable. The Rugers look appealing. Any thoughts as to whether the P345 is worth the extra change over the 97?

I don't want a pistol that won't fire while I'm changing magazines - that leaves the P345 in the dust as far as I'm concerned, since it has that iddiwa magazine safety.

I'd always stick tp the gun that's available on the market longer - hence, I'd get the P97.

Let someone else find out whether the P345 actually works as advertised during a live and dead encounter. If it works, you can always purchase it later.

Yes, you've stated you want a Commander-sized TDA pistol, but personally, the proven Ruger P90 appeals the most to me. It has already been approved as a duty weapon in smaller police departments, so it seems to be a good, reliable, economical gun. That's what I'd get. Just my thoughts and what do I know anyway.

I know of two smaller departments that are dumping the 97 due to reliabilty problems. I do know Ruger bought hand picked new stock to a sales meeting with one department and had ejector problems. Meeting over they are going to sigs.

Personally had one, when fired you could hear the loose tolerences. Sold it.

I would assume the mag safety can be disabled, but that is a good point. I am more interested in the 97 or 345 than the 90 due to the weight savings.

I really like Ruger's P series of autoloaders, but they have a reputation for having gritty triggers.

The P90 and P97 I just don't find comfortable at all... Ergonomics go a long way with me and unless I got one at an incredible deal, I wouldn't want one myself though I have recommended them both many times for folks that don't care so much what guns look like or feel like as long as they are reliable.

The 345 is borderline comfortable for my hands though I'm not beating a door down to get one of those either. For my money, I'd probably rather have an EAA Witness in 45 if an actual Commander or equilavent was out.

Haven't handled the new P345 yet. My stainless P97 fits my hand well and points naturally...for me anyway. Very accurate and very reliable. I am happy with it. Don't shoot it as much as I should because I have a lot of 9mm hand guns (including the stainles P94 which I like a lot) and the ammo is cheaper for range practice.

Got to look at a Ruger 45 at a local shop. Looks like they are too big for what I am after. I will have to pass on this series. Sounds like they are well made guns, though.
