After years of reading of them I finally came across one today in a pawn shop. It was the 4" blue with lots of rust on the barrel and cylinder. The trigger was @ 40 lbs-heavy. It looked rough and they wanted $399.00 for it-too much.

But I was amazed as to the size and weight of this revolver! It was significantly lighter than I expected and pointed in my had like a CZ 75-natural. Why did they stop making this? Does anyone have a source on any trade-ins?

This revolver felt smaller and more balanced than the GP100 3" I used to have. Thoughts?

The “six” models were discontinued because of the introduction of the SP101. Against the advice management, Bill did not want a middle range frame.

i'm pretty sure the "Six" models were replaced by the GP-100. it was meant to keep up with S&W who was upgrading from the M-19 (K-frame) to the 586 (L-frame) as service sized 6 shot wheelguns...they (GP-100 & L-frame) are Python sized. the Redhawk is after the market share held by the S&W N-frame

the SP-101 was meant to compete for market share with the S&W J-frame...hence 5 shots

the "Six" series was discontinued because Ruger wanted to further modernize manufacture of the wheelgun. i once read an interview where Bill Ruger said that he wasn't sure if they ever made any money of the "Six" series.

it is an outstanding gun and just the right size for any "reasonable" .357mag defense loading

I would hold out for a better one. :) However, keep in mind that Ruger still services these revolvers and would likely refurbish one at nominal or even no cost, if it is not too far gone.

I checked out a 90+% 4" SS Security Six yesterday at a gunshow. The asking price was $265! I had just picked up a new .308 a few tables away or I would have grabbed another security six to go with my 2.75" and 6" flavors.

The CEO didn't know whether or not a product was making money?

He was either a liar, an idiot or dual qualified. This pretty much solidifies my opinion of him since the AWB of 94.

"The CEO didn't know whether or not a product was making money?"

The actual quote in the article was something along the lines of "...if you include all of the development costs, I don't think we made a nickel on them"

From time to time I think I'll sell my Service-Six, but it's such a great gun I never do. When I bought a 4" Python I thought maybe I'd finally sell the Ruger, but I didn't. I suppose after 25 years I'm resigned to keeping it forever. Accurate, sturdy, great trigger, what's not to like.

Security & Speed Sixes aren't too tough to find if you're looking. In the condition you've described, the Pawn Shop price ($399) is quite high. They are great revolvers. If you wanna' see their real potential, take a gander at the Gemini Customs LLC website (Frankfort, Kentucky). Whoo-boy, those are wheelguns!

The last couple of years of the Sec 6/Speed 6 series are some of the best revolvers ever made, imho. Several PD's bought them and found them to be more reliable than S&W's at that time. (Late 70's and early 80's were dark days for Smith.)

I've owned them forever, and just love shooting and carrying them. Picked up extra parts over the years, "just in case", but I don't expect them to wear out in my lifetime, or the Grandkid's lifetimes.

Went to one as a duty gun years ago; my intention was to use it until I found something better. Never did. Still have the gun, and various other "Sixes" because I like them so well. Took the armorer's course on them which just confirmed what I knew about their toughness.

Picked one up in "fair" condition about ten years ago. It was on the ugly side but mechanically ok with decent bore. Had Ruger overhaul and refinish it for a modest price, gave it to my son. It's still in daily service, should last forever with decent care.

Probably the best guns Ruger ever made. The GPs are nice, but BIG.
