What's wrong with the semi-auto handgun marketing and development folks at Ruger? They seem be unaware that millions of folks now have CC permits and need smaller guns.

That many people really like tritium night sights on their handguns.

That picatinny rails are popular with many HD handgun choices.

As far as I can tell, there are no compact framed Ruger semi-autos and few or no aftermarket tritium sights that fit Rugers and only one model has a rail! :banghead:

I have been a Ruger fan and owner of three Rugers in the past and would like to be again, but the Ruger semi-auto handguns I see at their website seem to be stuck in an 1980's design mentality.

What's up with Ruger's lack of design foresight?

I think they are more concerned with making big semi-autos for people with big hands. Every time I hold one I think to myself, "Where am I going to hide this thing!"

This is one topic that I have thought about many times in the last few years. I still cannot figure it out. Smith and Wesson and Taurus are producing many small autos for CCW.
I guess that Ruger is making enough money selling their other handguns and rifles. On the other hand, it is expensive to produce new models from scratch, and that is what they would be doing. They are definately not catering to the CCW people.:neener:

only one model has a rail!

Two now. I'm pretty sure the redesigned P95 has a rail, and the P345.

FWIW, I read a rumor recently (Internet hearsay) that Ruger was working on a striker fired autoloader, which would of course be a completely new thing for them.

I believe XS, Mepro and Trijion all make sights for the P-Series. The P-95PR and the P-345PR both have the rails.

Personally, I like them, esp. the stainless slide versions. They are priced perfectly. They are simple to operate and way overbuilt for extra durability. They could offer more options though such as night sights and a sub-compact line. They also need a .357sig version.

I tend to think that Ruger would rather sell it's guns to sportsmen and the like rather than cater to those that buy weapons for self defense.

I'm sure Ruger's policy is something like "No reasonable / honest man needs a hi-cap 9mm with a 3 inch barrel that weighs 20 oz."

I carried my P89 for a while. Which proved to me that I can conceal carry anything if I want to. :) The P345 and the P95 are about a close as you get in compact. Their SP-101 line of revolver are compact. Maybe they feel that is their CCW line.

My Brothers Glock 17, fits my P345 holster like it was made for it, and the Glock grip is shorter, by a half inch. The fullsize Glock is still smaller and way lighter than my P345. I have a G19 on order:D And yes, Ruger is missing the boat.

I agree with Grunt.

Ruger is a principally a "sporting arms" company. That's what they are good at and should continue IMHO. They are a large company because of that!

Competing in the small, inexpensive auto business is a "loser" IMO.

I have a KP-90, and compared to my 1911-A1's, yeah it is a much wider gun. I looked at the P-345, and it does seem a bit smaller than the P-90.

Something about Ruger not just missing the boat.....they haven't even made it to the dock yet.....:D

Ruger pistols are cast, right? They have to make it big to be sturdy and strong. On another note, I heard Ruger will be producing their own line of 1911s this year.

Striker fired & 1911s? Hope its true! I read somewhere Ruger makes frames for Caspian, If thats accurate, wouldnt be to expensive to tool up. But do we really need another 1911?:D

If the T shirt's too tight, it bulges a little, so I like to wear an over garment with my P90 which, in South Texas, relegates it to cooler months. But, the gun is lighter than a 1911, about like a lightweight commander, and carries well in my Milt Sparks Summer Special. I found no difference in concealment with my old P95, wound up trading that one off after I got a P85 from a friend for cheap, a deal I couldn't refuse. Yeah, the P95 was a little lighter and a little shorter, but it still had that bulge.

Ruger has always had a thing for over beefin' their firearms. The good side is they never wear out and can take a pounding, the bad side being CCW. With the right holster, the P90 is at least light for its size, being about the same weight as a 3" K frame .357 revolver. So long as the shirt is baggy enough, I can carry it. What irks ya though is it's a single stack and could be a lot slimmer.

What I really want is a P90 in the original intended cartridge, 10mm. That was the intent of the design and probably why it's so danged beefy. No, 10 ain't popular and turned out to not be the wave of the future, but it's a good caliber and the Ruger is so danged accurate. It'd be one of the more portable, concealable 10s if they'd do it, too. That EEA Witness is a big gun. The G29 ain't bad, but I don't care for striker fired guns. I hope that striker gun Ruger rumor is false, frankly, or if it's true they don't put a doohicky trigger on it and call it "safe". That wouldn't be like Ruger, though. They tend to go overboard on the safety thing, too. The P345 is evidence of that.

For true concealment, I've turned to and been quite happy with Kel Tec. I would love to have a Ruger as concealable as my P11, but it just ain't gonna happen. I have several single action Ruger revolvers, love blackhawks, and two P guns. The two P guns, the Kel Tec, and a .380 are my only autoloaders. I'm more of a revolver guy, anyway, but my P90 is so good, it's one of my favorite all around guns hands down. That thing is so accurate and reliable, I'll forgive a little bulge under the T shirt. :D It's built like a friggin' tank, too. I know the P97 and the P345 are a little lighter and perhaps flatter, but the P90, in my mind, is the jewel of Ruger's P series, the best of the best. If it's a few ounces heavier than the P97 or a few tenths of an inch wider through the slide than the P345, I'll deal with it. :D I also LOVE Hogue's finger groove grip for P guns, something you can't put on a plastic frame and the Handall ain't quite the same.

Just because they don't make a model that fits your wants then they are missing the boat? Ruger handguns (except single action revolvers and large framed double action revolvers) have always catered to the LEO and Security markets who wanted holster handguns. The market is full of choices for those wanting other designs. Ruger is making good profits now without trying to enter an already flooded market.

Ruger's decision is financial more than anything.I believe they are the most consistently profitable civilian firearms company in America. There are a *lot* of competing options in the conealed pistol market, and it changes daily. There isnt quite as much competition in the budget pistol market, and they dont need to update a gun daily to get onto magazine covers to keep selling.

I prefer good sized handguns, I am 6'1, 180 pounds and conceal a P90 in the summer under a polo or tee shirt. I also carry a Sig 229 and XD 45 ACP service model. It isn't so much the size of the pistol but having a good holster (Uncle Mike's kydex holster isn't going to cut it), belt and the right carry location for your body type.

Ruger makes fine weapons, they are inexpensive to purchase, reliable, have replaceable grip panels which are missing in pretty much every polymer frame handgun, are pretty accurate and available in a wide number of configurations in caliber, color, and manual safety and DA / SA.

"pretty accurate"? I'd say, DANGED accurate. :D Neither my P95 nor my P85 can match this P90, though.

Hmm, well they seem to be doing something right as they are probably taking in more money than a lot of other companies out there. And let's not forget the their Revolver line if you want something potent and pocketable. I look to their autoloaders as a reliable means of protecting myself while at home and having fun at the range without breaking the bank. I'm no more upset about Ruger not making a compact pistol than I am about Glock not making a revolver :neener:
