I let my nephew have my 9mm Sigma for a song. Which by the way had been flawless since I bought it used. I now have a 9mm hi-cap hole in my collection. I have never been a big Ruger fan but the full size SR9 has caught my eye. Anybody own one? Is it reliable? Are there night sights available? The gun would serve as an HD and range gun.

I've had mine for about a year, very good handgun, accurate and so far no problems. If I go from a 45 to a 9MM carry handgun, it and my CZ PO1 will be my main carry 9MM's.....

I have the SR9C which is the compact version. It has been completely reliable and fits my hand great. I like that it's thinner than a Glock so it is my summer gun while my G23 is my winter gun. I'm not sure if there are night sights available for it.

Thanks guys. I really like the looks of this gun. It kind of reminds me of what a hi cap Kahr might look like. I haven't seen a lot of negative on the net, but I thought it was best to go to the guys who own them for comments on their experience.

franco I don't own a SR9 but from what I have read at www.rugerforum.com there have been upgrades done to them in the last year. If you decide to buy one I would look for one with a D shaped magazine release. That is the easiest way to make sure you get one with the latest upgrades.

Owned mine for 2 months, 500 rounds and love it. No issues or problems. No failures of any kind

My wife has one. Loves it so much she went and bought a SR9c for carry. She highly recommends it.

Thanks guys and thanks for the tip on the mag release Mike. Did a little research last night. I guess night sights are available from Ruger.

I've owned one for a bit, close to 2K rounds down the tube. One hundred percent malfunction free thus far. I've run a lot of NATO and +P loads through it, and have practiced a lot with steel cased ammo. Good to go so far.

The trigger smoothed out *significantly* after around 1000 rounds or so, though this may vary between individual weapons. I am now very accurate with it, primarily due to the ergonomics.

I also run a Viridian under it. Came with it in a deal. It's not bad actually.

Ruger Forum has more information than you could probably read in a week.

Here's my range report from a few months back:

I shot a brand new (330 series, 09 production) SR9 today. Black stainless model.

Low 40's and overcast, but a nice day spent shooting on private property in a relaxed environment perfect for someone new to handguns.

The mag safety was removed (by me) and I shot it with the 124gr. Swiss stuff from AIM. The trigger was very crisp for a striker fired gun, and the pistol easily shot sub 2" groups @7-10 yards. Not a great feat I know, but quite acceptable. I didn't notice any appreciable trigger overtravel, nor did the owner. He's a new gun owner, and we shot my 1911 side by side. He has it set up with the MSH curved. Its made of rubber, and felt great in the hand.

The mags are tough to load, but they will ease up.

The manual safety gets a bad wrap, but I found it easy to manage. It was stiff out of the box, but the owner has been working it for hours a day for a week now. It's quite smooth now.

The next step is going to be preemptively polish the barrel hood the ward off any peening. On a side note, I don't know why Ruger opted to blast the chamber area. I think it looks like crap, and it marks up quickly with normal cycling. The loaded chamber indicator is about the size of the rudder on a battleship. It's huge, painted red, and says LOADED WHEN UP on it in case you didn't know. At the very least, the red paint is coming off.

Bottom line, the Ruger SR9 is a good pistol for the money.

There are a higher percentage of guns out there (than usual) with minor to serious teething issues, and the design of the magazine safety is not ideal. Thankfully, the mag safety is easily removed and not considered necessary for most users.

My friend is very pleased with his purchase. He wanted something American made and striker fired. I suggested the M&P as well, but he chose the SR9 because of Ruger's sporting reputation. I think the "M&P" designation turned him off, but I'm not sure.
