Ruger SR9

Man, I heard so much hyp on the Ruger SR9 so I had to go to my Sportsmans Warehouse to check them out, well it seems they have mega firing pin problems,can discharge if hit hard or dropped.
They had three that they have just sent back and don't know when Ruger will have the problem fixed, now I ask you, how in the hell can a manufactuer
put out a product with a problem like this, it just blows my mind, and I am
(or was) a Ruger fan.

I live under the assumption that any gun can go off if dropped. If the safety is off, and you drop the sr9 under "certain conditions" it can go off. Ruger is doing the right thing, free shipping both ways, about a one week turn around, plus they are throwing in a free mag ($40 value).

Recalls happen.

The same ways other companies make mistakes. The commonest is that engineers design parts and do test them thoroughly, but somehow in manufacturing a dimension is changed or a part is made from the wrong material, and things don't work as they should. (The most famous such gun case was the M1 rifle "seventh round stoppage" which was due to one error in machining the receiver.)

I don't know the full story with the SR-9, but IMHO it is not indicative of any systemic problem at Ruger, so I would hold off cussing all their products.

Jim, I am certainly not cussing all thier products, I just think before a gun is released to the public it should be tested for all condtions, including drop fire.

How do you know it hadn't and passed? There's no reason to think ALL SR9s were defective, anymore than there's reason to think that the barrels will fall off all S&W revolvers.

the problem is supposed to be..if the gun is dropped with the safety off, it MAY fire..

simply put..all guns may do that..
Ruger is trying to do its best..
nice they are picking up the tab..and giving you a mag for your troubles..
new trigger groups are supposed to be available in May..


have you seen all the recalls on cars lately..

I'm not terribly bent out of shape about it, I still love my SR9 despite the recall. Ruger is fixing the issue at no cost to the owner and everyone gets a free mag out of the deal.

they might have messed u by allowing such things to leave the factory, but with that said like the op said, ruger is doing the right thing. they are a great company and they will take care ofthe customer. i would send the gun back get a couple free mags out of the deal. is it a hassel? yeah a little but that is better than a company that takes little or no strides to fix thier issues.

When I signed up for the recall, I also asked if they were going to improve that darned trigger. It seems a bit stiff for accurate fire under stress. I'm qualified with the gun and shoot it well enought, it just doesn't give me the same feeling of security that I get with a custom revolver trigger.

How many guns that are not expensive as hell feel as good as a custom revolver trigger? That is like saying my Springfield milspec doesn't measure up to my $3000 wilson combat 1911.

I have heard that pistols like the Beretta 92 can be tuned up pretty good by the right smith. Not sure about all these new striker fired pistols.

A perfect company would never make a mistake, but since there is no such thing..... I think it shows some character they Ruger stepped up to the plate, admitted ther mistake, is paying shipping and giving a token to their customers for the inconvenience. Granted this is a lethal weapon not a VCR, but how many defective products have you bought that didn't require 2 hours of voice menu hell to get to a human (probably from India) and paying your own shipping in the hopes they might fix it? I am not trying to be a fanboy here. This is the first auto handgun I have ever bought and I am not real happy to lose it for a week or so. If Ruger does actually get it back to me in a week, I might consider being a fanboy. Does anyone remember the Ford Pinto. Rumor had it that the bean counters figured it was more cost effective to pay off lawsuits than fix the problem. Think about what would have happened if someone died before they admitted/fixed the problem. The anti-gun nuts would have had a field day.


As far as the stiker fired pistols, compared to what I am used to: the gun is so light, it takes more preasure, and I am so out of practice that my targets look like Swiss cheese. I am slowly getting better though.

They found a problem and they have let the world and everyone they can get in contact with know about it, and what they are going to do to fix it.

The right thing to do. Honorable.

Glock has had three non recall, recalls.

If you know you need it they will fix it. My buddy had to pay for his 23 to be repaired when both rear rails sheared off.

The first non recall, recall, was because the weapon could fire when the slide went home. Now if you have a first generation Glock 17, and haven't had it fixed, don't wait for Glock to tell you. IIRC it was about 5 to 7 parts they replaced the original parts with.

Many folks don't know about it. Don't wait for Glock. They don't do it right, and will deny everything.

Perfect my ass. I have some, but I don't trust the company. Ruger is much better.

Go figure.
