I overheard someone today saying that in response to US threatened embargoes over the Ukraine, Russia was going to stop exporting ammo to here. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

if i had a nickel for every time i've heard this rumor (or some similar variation) in the last five years...

No, not yet. The situation in Ukraine is pretty fluid and I'm not sure that anything permanent has been done yet.

Even if there is a shortage, somewhere like Romania would be happy to step in and help fill the gap. The Russians sell us a lot of cheap ammo, but they don't sell us all of it. I'd expect any shortage to be temporary (until some other country can get production ramped up) and only made worse by rumors and panic buying.

Having said that, I expect there to be panic buying. People are people and they do what they do.

Betcha heard it from an ammo seller huh?

It is as made up as it gets, they are trying to scare up some sales. If Russia truely did stop exporting ammo, then Romania, Bulgaria, and Ukraine (just to name a few) would start tooling up fast to fill the void.

i'm not privy to any of putin's backroom meetings, but historically, russia hasn't really made a habit of not taking people's money.

I would think they would continue sales just to annoy our wonderfully pro-gun POTUS.

On the other hand, I will be surprised if above referenced POTUS doesn't block imports.
That's a buy one, get one free for him. Not only does he get to "punish" Russia, he gets to screw us at the same time......

There is plenty of ammo buying right now.

Just try to order Russian 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 from the bigger websites. I watched SGammo inventory disappear as I watched. Aim Surplus is suddenly sold out. Got a product availability alert from them (5.45) but it was already sold out. Ammoman has some 5.45 left, no 7.62x39. Centerfire Systems is out...JGSales has it in stock.

All I can say is good luck out there.

There is no logical reason for Putin to stop ammo sales to the US public since people that buy AK ammo generally do not vote for the Obama Democrats. Not saying this is what he will do, but it makes not a lot of sense. A lot of that imported ammo is made in the Ukraine anyway. Price of AK was going down and all of a sudden these rumors state. I purchased my last case of ammo last month and was not planning to buy more.

They would only stop all sales if they wanted to make less money.

That being said I did buy two tins of 5.45x39 surplus today, but only because of the free shipping offered by my vendor.

Presumably, the problem isn't the Russians. It's more likely that the US will impose some kind of trade restrictions on Russia to punish the Russians for their actions in the Ukraine.

Doubt Putin would turn down money from the U.S. used to help strengthen and maintain their ammo making capabilities.
People have already started considering the possibility of short supply though, it would seem. (Cough...errrr) When I picked up a case of 7.62x39 three days ago it was $0.21/rd. via ammoseek. Now the cheapest is $0.23/rd, with all the cheaper sellers sold out.

Wolf was contacted and responded saying that they get their ammo from many other countries as well and that there are and have always been contingency plans in place in case one or more sources dried up. That being said, they also said that they have shipments already on the water and have heard no such nonsense from Russia or ANYONE for that matter about the possibility of stopping the flow of ammo or accessories coming out of Russia.

If Classic Arms (in NC) had not "sold out" of the basic lower-cost Saiga 5.45 rifles (planned two weeks ago, but waiting for extra work), back on Tuesday, with Russian troops on every airport tv screen, Russian ammo as Plan B seemed the cautious alternative. And ammo is always the priority.

The same kind of talk which suddenly increases sales of Russian rifles implies that Russian ammo Could be next...
Think about it: protests in Kiev Ukraine have been worsening for months, and Gunbot has had more than a few entries for Ukrainian ammo for maybe the same time span. The only year-round warm water port used by Russia for centuries has been the Black Sea, right by Ukraine.

A little more geography and reading the news might not seem cool. Well, those 2,000 rds. of Russian Wolf 7.62x39 ammo arrived today.
Googling the Black Sea map and thinking about consequences of the news might not be so bad. Hoarding for retirement.
Our next WH "royalty" might place much higher taxes or tarriffs on imported ammo. Should we all just wait and see what happens?

Sg ammo sold something like 3,000,000 rds of 7.62x39 in 3 days.

Edit:
From sam at sgammo:

Stuff is selling so fast in 762x39, we did that whole truckload of 762x39 just
like that. There may be some more of that but we are going to see availability
dive on 762x39 shortly, in in turn prices may rise substantially. Guys you
might want to look at other options at the current market price before it turns
up.

At the rate the consumer is buying 762x39 right now supply side of the flow
cannot keep up with demand for long. Without a quick resolution price could
spike quickly once the market dries. Nothing is ever certain with these things,
but we shipped over 3,000,000 rounds of 762x39 in the last 3 days. Textbook
supply and demand conditions almost always overrun the market in these sort
of panic buys. I think buying at today's price the $220-230 per 1000 is buying
at close to bottom prices, that's the same price this stuff was 6 years ago back
in 2008 so it really can't go much lower and with a wrong turn in the politics
price could go way up

The Ukraine's may not be shipping out any ammo as they may need it if they go to war with Russia. 7.62x39 is low or out at many places.
Copes, said they are dry and so are their suppliers and no ETA if and when more arrives.

>>Russia to stop exporting ammo to US?<<

I'm not so concerned about this as I am about Comrade Barry putting a stop to our importation of same. This Ukranian matter could be just the "gift" he's been waiting for... the opportunity to punish Russia and put the screws to US gun owners at the same time. A win-win situation for him if there ever was one.
