Russian Makarov

I've got four East German Makarov pistols and wouldn't let the worst of them go for under $300.

They're a much better pistol than a Bersa - all solid forged steel, no alloy. No odd springs under the grip, no internal lock, and an overall feel of a quality piece.

I wanted to like Bersas, I really did. until I ran across a table of them at a gunshow. As far as I'm considerned a Bersa is a better looking hi-point.

I have owned a Bersa and I wouldnt trade my new Russian Mak for a new Bersa and $75.

I am not saying the Bersa was bad just that I think the Mak is that much better.

quote"I love my Russian Mak, after putting the rubber aftermarket grips on it fits my hand perfectly. I know Florida Gun Works has Bulgarian Maks for $199....if you dare"

Went to the site and found CZ52's at 269(current price 159 everywhere) and Romanian TT33 at over 300 when it is available everywhere for a 100 less!
Couldn't find any Bulgarian Maks

Yep, we're here.

Yes, I bought the Russian "commercial variety" of the Mak, an IJ-70 Baikal, ten years or so ago. It's in .380 and has adjustable sights. My price was around $150.

Good Lord, the thing shoots like a house on fire  is as accurate as my Glock 17, absolutely reliable with any load I've tested with it, handy, and solid. It's my CCW choice more often than not.

I'm not fond at all of .380, but it's cheap to load, really good premium SD loads are widely available, and I know that the MAK will deliver 9 of them right where I aim them with no malfunctions, so that's a big plus with me.

I don't have a higher rating to give than: "I trust it as my CCW," so by all means, I'm a Mak fan, too.

Makarov's are typical Russian firearms. They may not be pretty but they work like crazy. If I only had on gun I wouldn't feel bad with a Makarov. It accurate, reliable, and powerful enough to do the job. I wouldn't put it in the same class as my P7 but anyone carrying a Mak is well enough defended in my book.

The one modification I've made on all my Maks is to put a split key ring through the mag release to allow for easier operation ... you may need to find a very light weight but quality key ring but they're out there and believe me it makes all the difference in the world ... I can't imagine using one w/o it ....

There are advantages to living in a part of the country where people are mostly patriotic rednecks.

That brought a smile to my face. (And I come from a long line of such people. You should have seen my grandfather's scorn when he found out I was a Russian Studies major.)
