A friend of mine has a Rem. 710 30-06 with quite a bit of surface rust.

I wiped it down with CLP and oiled the bolt with 3:1 oil. But the blueing is pretty much lightly rust orange. Is there a more agressive rust removal. I notice some use brass scrub with WD-40 or Kroil. What do you prefer?

Can a cold blue help after the rust is removed?

Tried to remove the stock, but size 2 and 2.5 allen wrenches don't fit the bolt by the trigger. One is too big and the other too small. Anyone know the size?

I say don't bother with blueing. Just paint over it. Those are cheap rifles. Camo paint would be an improvement for a brand new 710.

I soaked a rusty 870 Express with Bullfrog Lubricant and Rust Blocker, left it for a while, and rubbed it with a rag until the rust went away. Kroil should do that even better.

I wouldn't try too hard. Just give it your best reasonable efforts, keep the bore from rusting, and use the gun until it falls apart. It's truly a POS, but as long as it works, it works. Don't spend too much time, effort or money on it. Just use it, enjoy using it, and start saving for another gun.

or just do a cold blue job, with that stuff made by the peeps that make all the woodworking/shining/waxing stuff.

I would just use some thin oil, then use some 0000 steel wool, and lightly rub, you don't even need to use pressure; just the weight of the wool and your hand rubbing the metal is enough pressure. that will get all the rust off.

Not really worth the effort. I've done it. It comes off, and doesn't do anything to protect from rust, anyway.

I mean, go ahead, but like I said, don't waste effort and money on a 710.
