a friend and i went to a local auction last night to relieve friday night boredom. about 90 guns and most were junk, but i found this rose amoung the thorns. a smith corona 03A3 with a tag saying needs parts, a quick look and i found it was only missing the follower and spring. when it came up, it was stated it was missing some parts and was sold as is. it started at 200.00 and went to 310.00 my last bid. it looks like it has a remington bolt, but all other parts are smith corona. here it is with a follower and spring installed. eastbank.

Nice snag!
Much nicer wood than my CMP Remington. Mine is a SHOOTER, however.
I paid more than double that! At CMP South last month.

I have two -- a Remington and a Smith Corona. Don't worry about it having a Remington bolt. These rifles were mostly rebuilt, and the Army didn't care about keeping all the original parts together -- the rifles were stripped, the parts put in bins, and when they were reassembled, whatever part came out of the bin was what went on the rifle.

If you can, get a milled '03 floor follower. They tend to be a bit more reliable than the stamped '03A3 followers.

Beautiful find. That "needs parts" tag was a blessing, you were able to get the gun for way less than it's worth! Remington bolt? Who cares! Only a hard core collector, that's who. Might have a two groove barrel, I had one that did. It was one of the most accurate milsurps I have ever owned.

Let us know how it shoots!

it has a four groove barrel dated S.C. 11-43. i will not get to shoot it for a week or two.. eastbank.

Definitely a great find and at that price you made out extremely well! Congrats on the '03-A3!

Nice snag. Nicer than my 1903A3. Although mine has the privilege of living close to where it was made. Excellent find.

i don,t know if S.C. kept them thru the war or not, a friend has a 1-43 remington with a 4 groove barrel, but i think the remingtons went from 4 groove to two groove some time in late 43. eastbank.

Saw an A3 that had been dropped into a commercial stock but still had original sights and un cut barrel yesterday at a local show. Considered make and off but then....... why would anyone grind out the stripper clip guides? As always at such little local shows (and big ines really too far to drive too) the dealer wanted way too much anyway......those grapes WHERE probably sour anyhow.
