I came into a excellent condition J Frame model 042 in a trade. I searched and found a few threads on it but they were all a few years old. I am curious as to what the value maybe today.

From what i gather some where matte finish and some were gloss. Mine is the gloss. Also seems that some might have the 042 over stamped over 642. Mine does not seem to be over stamped.

Is the gloss or matte more sought after? Over stamped or not higher valued? I do not have the box. Any idea on value?

I am going to try to upload some pics

I hate bumping my own thread, but is anyone have anymore info on the 042?

The Blue Book of Gun Values, 34th ed. mentions that this model was made in 1992 only. In 100% condition, it lists at $450. In 98% condition, $350. Those grips may or may not be stock. They are Uncle Mike's grips, and one came on a mid-90s 640-1 that I have. Those grips are sought after by themselves, they go for $50 or more dollars on eBay.

Summary from the S&W Standard Catalog: Model 042 made in 1992 only, as stated previously. It came in matte or polished blue, and came with Uncle Mike's Combat Grips as standard. The 042 is listed as a transitional model, not an airweight Centennial Model 40, which had an aluminum frame and steel cylinder, and this model was not marked Airweight. SN is laser etched under the top strap on a few models. Some models have MOD 042 overstamp in the yoke cut. Some speculate that the 642 had color and finish problems and were blued and overstamped to "fix" the problem. It further states that this model was never officially cataloged by S&W. My catalog is a few years old but suggests a price of $500 for excellent condition. Hope this is what you're looking for.
