I bought this in 1979 or 80..
6" Barrel
Sr# n228765
info (on the frame) with the cylinder open is N228765 & MOD. 28-2..on the swing arm of the cylinder is 33665 &F15..
I put "bull" grips on because, it never fit my hand the same way twice..
I have the original box, and the insert.
What would be a fair price and what year ?? 357-2.jpg 357-5.jpg ctr.jpg left.jpg

I routinely see the 4 inch revolver sell for 550-650 even with the box. The 6 inch is even less. However it's worth whatever someone will pay. Search GunBroker for comparable guns and see what they SOLD for not what they're asking

R 40. Smith & Wesson Model 28-2. Serial # N5272. .357 Magnum caliber double action revolver made c. 1970. 6” barrel with an excellent bore. This gun is built on the N frame and features a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. The blue finish on the metal is in excellent condition with only some muzzle wear. The checkered walnut service grips are in very good condition with slight wear. Rear adjustable sight is missing. Action works fine. Includes the box, instructions, cleaning tools and screw driver, an Uncle Mike’s shoulder holster, and a Bushnell 2X to 6X power scope in what looks like a no drill mount. Sold For 550.00

Your would bring more.

Welcome to the Forum!

Around here in SW FL, I would expect to see that gun with $650-750 on the tag at a gunshop or gunshow.

I bought mine for $700 two years ago with no box, but in excellent condition and the original grips (its wearing target stocks now, like yours).

Collector interest in the M28 has always been soft compared to the M27 with its higher grade finish- which makes the M28 a shooters gun and a (relative) N-frame bargain.

Thank you.. I have the original adjustable rear sight.. I put the outlined sight on about 10 years ago, when I had to get stronger glasses.. Thank you for your input!!!

Thanks for the info...

Photo from Buds. Midwayusa sells S&W also.
If someone wants a "shooter" and not a collectable, i would buy a new gun. But really comes down to how cheap the used gun is.

When pricing used, i look at whats available price wise and pay less for used. Doesnt have to be the same model. Screenshot_20190907-091524.jpg Screenshot_20190907-092911.jpg

Your Model 28 looks to be in great shape! Probably priced right at somewhere between $700 to $800. Don't know about now but back in the day the 6" barrel brought more than the 4" barrel model.

That is what I'm thinking... Thanks for your input..

M28s in good to excellent condition are in the $600-$800 range. I gave $700 for this one not too long ago:

You're just not gonna see much more out of them when a nice M27 can still be had for around a grand.
