S&W 3913 good for range use?

Hi Everyone:

I am considering buying a S&W 3913. After reading up on it, it has a great reputation as a carry piece/CC weapon (let alone a good reputation generally!).

Someday I may get a CCW permit, but in the meantime the pistol will really only be a range toy. Is it appropriate for the range--i.e., comfortable for extended target shooting? I know many CC-oriented pistols (e.g., Kel-Tec, Kahr, Ruger LCP) may be excellent for CC, but not much fun at the range. BTW, my budget dictates that "extended target shooting" will typically be not much more than 200 rounds at a time .

Thoughts?

Well, if it's just for range use, there are better guns -- especially Ruger .22LR autos. But if you like the gun, sure, it will hold up fine. The 9mm is fun to shoot and it's a decent caliber. Any of the second or third generation S&Ws are great. I have a 659 that's very nice, but I like revolvers for the range as they don't throw brass everywhere, including other people.

Still, the 3913 should last as long as your pocketbook! And if you ever need to carry it, it will be a good buy.

It will be more accurate than you can hold it.

If you can afford enough ammo OR reloading components to wear it out, you can afford to buy 10 or 20 new guns.

A 3913 is a great pistol. It's one of six 3rd gen Smiths I own, and I will buy another 3913 when I find another one in really good condition. The 3913 is fun at the range, and a really good IWB-carry CCW. I paid $425 for my first one.

Although I like the factory grips on double-stack 3rd gens, for my hands, the single-stack 3rd gens really benefit from Hogue grips.

Dude, it's your money, if you want the gun, get it, just don't expect it to do it all. The only gun I kinda regret is a KT P40, and that is because I can't shoot it (the limpwristing with 180grn and I haven't found any 135)

(i) Barrel lenght and (ii)Trigger pull plays the key roles in the range. SA trigger pull of 3913 is good. But the barrel lenght is not enough. For the range I will advise the CZ 75B. But it is not good for CCW. Thus, you have to make decision. Will you choose a good range gun (CZ75B) or a good carry gun (3913). I had the same dilemma, finally I make my choice in favor of CZ75B, based to the fact that I own a Glock 19. But if I have not the G 19 for CCW, my choice would be 3913.

The 3913 is a truly great pistol. There's just something about how it shoots that really grabs me. Every time that I shoot mine I think to myself that it's exactly how a semi auto handgun should be. The only other semi auto that I get that feeling from is my HK P2000sk. I'd be almost tempted to recommend looking at the 3906 for a bit more mag capacity, but really the 3913 does everything that the 3906 does, and better. Plus, the 3913 will offer you the carry option down the road if you go there.

One of the best handguns S&W has ever made. I have one for Concealed Carry. It's light, fast pointing, and accurate.
I probably shoot this more at the range than any other pistol I currently own.
