S&W .40 M&P: Opinions Please

I am looking at purchasing .40 Smith & Wesson M&P. I have fired the gun and I really like the feel. Seems very accurate. This will be my first, and probably last, handgun. I will be using it for personal protection. Can I get some opinions from the guys who know? Is this a good choice?

IMHO, the M&P40 is a great gun. I had some light strike issues early on (I bought it about 1 month after they were released, bleeding edge technology ), but S&W fixed it no problem. I have not had any trouble since. Solidly built pistol with great customer service. I am extremely pleased with the pistol. The replaceable backstrap is also a plus. I'd buy it and not look back.

I trust an M&P .40c with my life. It is my carry gun, and it shoots and handles excellently. Also, S&W have really pulled out all the stops on their customer service when it comes to this gun. If you ever have any problems with it, they will fix them quickly and without hassle.

The M&P History:
The Smith & Wesson M&P (Military & Police) has always been a highly respected revolver from its introduction to today. I just picked my M&P 40 up this morning. I put 85 rounds through it this afternoon with no issues at all. This is my first semi auto pistol. I love the feel and balance of it. A very nice gun to shoot IMHO.

Thanks for the input guys. I think that I knew the first time I handled the piece that it was the one I wanted. Bondmid003, to answer your question, I am a rifle and shotgun man. Have been all my life. I really need only one hand gun and this is my choice. Thanks again to all of you for the input . You have affirmed that this old man still knows quality in a firearm.

I'v shot the m&p 40,,,,good gun,,,,,,,,BUT before you buy it, check the XD and the XD-M. To me the ergonomics of the springfield is much better especially if you are talking about personal protection...... Contrary to what people might think, you don't have the time to aim a gun in life or death situations in civilian life. You "point and shoot".... I have the XD-M, it's adjustable grip to enhance point shooting and 16+1 capacity make it ideal.
Keep in mind that in high stress situations a persons accuracy, trained or not, can fall to 10% depending on how reactive or 'thought about' there shooting habits are. A person also tends to grip tighter during high stress also...That is why I believe in finding a gun that fits your hand and shoots where you ;point', not where you 'aim'.....

I own the .45 M&P.... only because it was 300 or so dollars less than the Colt Commander that I almost.... almost (Jest this close) bought. I literally flipped a coin came up on the M&P and decided someday buy the Colt for the hell of it.

It was to be the handgun that I can understand and get to know fairly quickly. I like fast.. well.. let's leave it here shall we?

I have the M&P 40 with Crimson Laser grips and love it. IMO the feel of the gun is the best on the market. very reliable.
