S&W .500 Mag Shooting thread

A 500 mag is on my list for sure. Ive shot the short barrel survival one (orange grip, unsure of barrel length). I thought it wasnt too unpleasant, but not an all day shooter by my standards. Awesome to shoot the monster calibers.

You shot 5 times but, there was 6 holes in the target?
Steve

I think I said 6 shots. The way I shoot something new is to only load one round for the first try, which is what I did here. If anything had gone awry it would have been an empty gun. Then I loaded up the cylinder with 5 rounds and blasted away.

<slightly off topic, but it's my thread>

That's the way I fire any new gun, especially an AR build.

-One round in the mag. This tests first round feeding, firing, extraction, ejection and hold open.
-Two rounds in the mag. Tests feeding and disconnecter.
-Finally a full magazine.

After seeing some youtube videos where people shot a 460 or 500 and squeezed the trigger again during recoil, that is how I started out with my 460 - only one in the cylinder at a time. And I do this whenever I let someone shoot the 460 for the first time.

Good procedure to follow.

I let my skinny female friend shoot my 460 mag. I loaded 3 rounds of 45 Colt first, then a 454 Casull, and then a 460 mag.

She had a big grin on her face for the first three. Then I stopped her, made sure she had a firm grip, warned her about what was coming, and let her go.

After that one round of 454 she said she didn't want to shoot anything more powerful and I told her that's fine. She didn't need to do anything she didn't want to. I congratulated her on shooting a really powerful gun, and she was really happy.

Whenever I see a YouTube video of some redneck jerk handing a really powerful gun to a wee little person and not warning them, and then that person bounces the barrel off of their forehead, I get mad.

Me too, how idiotic is that? Not only are you risking injury to someone you're supposed to care about but you scare that person away from shooting forever. Quite the opposite, when my 55yr old, 100lb aunt wanted to shoot my .416, I tried to talk her out of it. When she insisted, I did everything I could to prepare her for it.

Exactly. We lose shooters and credibility when people do that kind of crap

I love shooting the 460. I have the 4" and the 8.375" versions, the latter being scoped. It's heavy enough so that I can handle the recoil ok. But I use the "reduced recoil" recipes. No point in going heavier to punch holes in paper. Versatility of calibers is great.

I also have the 500 in both lengths. I need to scope the longer barrel version. I think it cries out for a scope. I think I'll order the Weigand base and 4 ring set for it and sniff out a good scope. I always worry about eye relief on a variable power pistol scope. Some are scarily close IMHO. Any good scope suggestions?

Someone gave me a dozen BB 440gr rounds for the 500. I fired one. Maybe I will fire the rest once I get the added weight of the scope.

Just swiped up 60 rds of 500sw at the gun show this morning for a crisp Benjamin. 350gr hollowpoints loaded in starline brass. Loaded by Ram Ammunition.

It's amazing how well you can look things over at a gun show when it just opened and there was a snow and ice storm ending from the night before. Now at noon, I bet there's barely standing room.

I have yet to shoot any 45 or 454 rounds in mine, although I have worked on a few reduced recoil loads. But I generally let someone shoot my 44mag before I let them shoot the 460.
