S&W 629 price check

I just turned down a 4" 629-1 in about 95% condition that a friend was selling. He was asking $500 for the pistol.

I've packed my latest blue book for a move, so I'm not totally sure of the value.

Was it a smoking deal and should I reconsider, or can I pick up another like this any day of the week and twice on sundays?

I own the identical gun. That is a reasonable price. toward the low end. I'm sure you can find another deal when you are ready to buy.

two years ago I added two 629s to my collection a 629-2 6", and a 629-5 4" Mountain Gun. The first was $425 after some haggling ,the Mountain gun was $525 LNIB both from a local gun store. $500 is probably good for Alaska as long as the gun is in excellent condition and doesnt have any timing issues.
One thing to remember is that the 629-3 is where they beefed up the gun's frame and incresed the size of the cylinder locking notches, the endurance package its called. This was done because Pin shooters and others who shot Nuclear loads found their guns going out of time, and the cylinder rotating backwards when they fired those 300 grainers at 1300FPS, So if you want to shoot nuclear loads on a regular basis consider a -3 or later model. My -2 is fine since I dont shoot nuclear loads.
