A friend of mine who deals in bulk police trade-ins and such recently acquired a lot of 25 S&W 6906's. I picked up a couple for a little more than a song (lucky these days especially) and I have fallen in love with them. Carried alot but shot a little, I detailed stripped them to clean and replace springs, something I do with all my used gun purchases. I would like to obtain advice about refinishing or coating them with Duracoat or whatever. Stainless is not my favorite in autos but I love it in wheelies. What or my options as far as getting these two new additions pleasing to the eye? Will I run into trouble with a combination stainless slide and alloy frame? These will be working (truck) guns and flat black or gray is fine with me. If you have not guessed by now, this aspect of firearms is alien to me. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Congrats on the 6906. It's a great pistol as are all the SW 3rd generations.

There is no problem with the SS slide and alloy frame. If you don't like the SS color there may be refinishing options you can try. When I get my pistols or rifles refinished I have it done at Techplate (www.techplate.com). They've done 13 of my firearms and all have come back looking great. The prices are fair and my guns are usually back to me within a month. Take a look at their website and if you have any questions you can email Marshall. He's very knowledgeable and helpful. Good luck.

An important thing to remember is not to let them strip the anodizing off your frame. It is there as a hard outer coat over the alloy, if they try to re-anodize it, your tolerances will be off.

For the stainless slide, Ferritic Nitrocarburizing...commonly called Melonite is very good. I highly recommend H&M Metal Processing

If you want them to do the stainless slide and the alloy frame, I highly recommend CCR for a wide range of suitable finishes
