I have long been a Glock fan, with my main go-to defense gun being a Glock 19. But I have always liked the 45 ACP cartridge and have had various 45 automatics, including a Glock 21, Sig P220, and numerous 1911s. I love shooting 1911s, but was never completely at ease with carrying a cocked and locked 1911. The Sig 220 is an excellent gun, but the high bore axis and DA/SA transition made it less than ideal. I owned a G21 and G30 for a while, but found the grip too fat for my hands. All of the above guns were good guns, they just weren't exactly what I was looking for in a carry gun in 45 ACP.

The S&W M&P series had never interested me until I saw the 2.0 version, which looked better, and seemed to be getting good reviews, so about a week ago I splurged and bought the M&P 45 M2.0, full size (not even sure they make anything less than full size except for the Shield). Here are my initial impressions after having shot it today.

I like the look of the gun. It looks better than the old version M&P. Fit and finish were good, certainly on par with Glock, and what one should expect in a service grade handgun. The sights were basic 3 white dots, functional but not fancy. The safety was very positive, with an audible and tactile click on and off. The magazine catch was similar, very positive, and appropriately placed for easy manipulation. The stippling at first seemed a bit coarse but this would prove not to be an issue at the range. I tried the gun with all 3 of the back straps, and ended up liking the smallest one best, which is what I placed on the gun prior to going to the range.

All of my shooting today took place at 50 and 75 feet. I fired 100 rounds of Federal HST 230 g JHPs, 100 rounds of Federal Hydroshock 230g JHPs, and 100 rounds of my 45 reloads, consisting of a 230g FMJ over Vihta Vuori powder, but I don't remember off top of my head how many grains. The reloads are a mild load, and recoiled a little less than the Federals.

I did not clean or lube the gun prior to firing. I shot it totally as I received it. I had no stoppages or malfunctions of any kind. 300 perfect rounds. I found the gun highly shootable, easy to point, and accuracy was fine. Shooting at 50 feet, I could easily dump the 10 round magazine into a 3" circle shooting offhand, taking only enough time between shots to get back on target.

Overall, I was very happy with it. I shoot it as well as a 1911, and better than the Glocks and Sig 220. I am about to clean it and put it into service. It think it is going to be a good one.

All this said, I am and always have been a fan of the Glock. I have great faith in them. But I do see the M&P 2.0 as an improvement over the Glock. Glock has a loyal fan base which will be hard to sway, but if one looks at these two guns objectively, it is hard for me not to see the M&P 2.0 as an improvement.

Nice review!!!

I really like the 2.0s and I think they fit my hand and trigger finger to perfection.

Only issue is... capacity. I just can't see carrying a 10 round .45 when my XD is 10 rounds in compact or 13 rounds with the full size grip. Glock is also a 13 rounder. FN hammer guns are 15 rounders (though massive). It's kinda like having a fullsize 9mm with only 15 rounds when the competition is turning out 17-19 round mags.

Also on a side note, I feel like there are many guns that topple Glocks in many/most aspects. But Glock is for some reason still the gold standard (well.. there are many reasons). I do like that it can be taken apart with a keychain tool though, even though I don't own one (I'll wait til the Glock Gen 9 or 10 is out)

Yes the magazine capacity is less, but it is still pretty good at 10 rounds. The benefit of this is that the grip doesn't have to be as thick so I can get a better grip and shoot it better. I would rather have a good fit and 10 rounds that hit in a 3" circle at 50 feet than a bad fit, and 13 rounds that I am not so good at getting on target. If you have big hands, the G21 is still a great option.

I would point out that I favor a thumb safety, which my M&P 2.0 has, but the Glock does not. I know this is controversial, but I like thumb safeties. I am also very used to them from shooting 1911s for 30 years, so it is second nature to deactivate a thumb safety. Other people's experience may not produce the same opinion.

That is a very good point. If I do get a 2.0 (probably will one day), it will have the safety since I like the option and no one else offers one in a striker (commonly at least as the XD has a rare version)... and if I want a gun without one, I have those already

I came to the same conclusion shortly after I bought mine as well.

Good sights that are made out of metal, better trigger, better frame, more ergonomic, better texture, more aesthetically pleasing, better finish, and 25% less expensive.

I haven't shot either pistol but I think the shield 45 feels better in the hand and certainly has a better trigger than the m&p 45 2.0. I think the hk usp 45 is the glock killer :p. (I do have a shield 9)

Good review. I’m still awaiting the M&p 45 compact m2.0 before I join the m2.0 fan club. I had an original m&p 9 that was a good gun but ultimately got traded for something I wanted more. The m2.0 is definitely an much needed improvement

I am probably going to get the M&P 9mm compact after my experience today. From what I hear it is the size of the G19, which is about the perfect combination of size versus capacity.

I'm in the market for a .45. I'll wait until I can get my hands on the P320 compact (9 + 1) and see how it feels. Seems like a good compromise.

My problem with 10 round full size .45s is I'd rather just carry 8 im a 1911
13 or 14 and things get interesting.

Until they dump the hinged trigger, Glocks for me. Even with APEX parts I just can't love the M&P, much as it feels great in the hand.

. . . I favor a thumb safety, which my M&P 2.0 has, but the Glock does not. . . I am also very used to them from shooting 1911s for 30 years, so it is second nature to deactivate a thumb safety.

Odd, but my familiarity with my EDC 1911 Commander with an Ed Brown extended safety is why I can't abide thumb safeties on poly pistols. . . they're all too small. Hitting the 1911's switch and resting a high-thumb on it is second nature; I still haven't seen a poly pistol with a thumb switch large or forward enough to hit without breaking my grip.

If I wasn't already so invested in Glocks (guns, holsters, mags, muscle memory) that's the route I would go. If only they had the 320 out before I bought my first Glock

The safety on the M&P is definitely smaller than an extended safety on a 1911, but bigger than the original safety on 1911s. I did not find manipulating it difficult.

I've shot my friends M&P 45 2.0 and agree with your comments, it's a great gun!!
I also have an M&P 2.0Compact. I did upgraded it with an Apex DAEK trigger kit after the first 1,000 rnds (didn't like the shape of the hinged trigger). It has replaced my G19 Gen 3 in most all aspects.

"Its a Glock killer" Each of us is entitled to our opinions. With that said I disagree.

How much shooting have you done with the 2.0, and what did you find wrong with it? I like Glocks too, and main carry weapon is usually a G19, but the 2.0 has some advantages, at least to me.

Glock, still the standard which all others are measured..

The M&P did take a step forward with the 2.0 in the 9mm for sure. I have not fired the 45 2.0 yet.

Balrog, I’m glad you found a pistol that works for you. But a Glock killer, hardly. I just don’t see people dumping their Glocks, so they can run out and pick up a Smith.
In your eyes the Smith may be a great improvement over the Glock. (maybe it is) For most, I suspect, its just another polly striker gun. Yawn.

I don't see why you think people have to dump their Glocks to get an M&P. I still have 3 G19s and a G29, with no plans to get rid of anything. What I am saying is, you should try the M&P before you decide, because I think a lot of people will find they like the M&P better. Glock was an innovative design in the 80s and 90s but the company seems to be stuck in that time. I still love my Glocks, but do see advantages to the M&P v2.0.

Lets see where do I start, Parris Island August 1964 fired the 1911A1 for familiarization and is this is written in my seventh decade. I've witnessed the next great thing multiple times over the decades in regards to handguns. There is always going to be the next great thing, thus I don't chase rainbows anymore looking for the next best thing. :)
