Some of my observations regarding the subject revolver pieced together from various threads posted on other forums. I have close to 900 rounds thru the little revolver.

Single action trigger broke at a bit over 4 lbs on my RCBS trigger scale. Throats are between .429 & .430 (.429 plug gage go, .430 no go). Bbl/cyl gap - .004 feeler gage go, .006 no go. Gun weighs 35 oz with Hogue 500 grips.

Shot a fairly wide range of ammo ranging from 200 Saeco full wadcutters to 325gr WLNGCs and 22.0gr of H110. Don’t remember the 200gr WC load, but performance on paper was terrible. The best groups at both 25 and 50 yds were shot with a MBW 260gr WFNGC, 23.0gr H100, Fed Mag Primer and new Top Brass. This load shot a bit over 2” at 50 yds. Thought this was a fluke so to verify I shot 5 more with similar results.

The little gun is an absolute delight to shoot with both .44 special equivalent and full mag loads. The lighter loads are obviously more fun for extended shooting sessions.

I have both 4 ¼” and the new 2.75” M69s. My impression is that the 2.75” gun shoots “softer” recoil wise than the 4 ¼” version. I’ve chronographed both with the same loads and the short barrel runs about 100 fps slower than it’s longer brother (except for the big 325gr) — this moderates recoil. Of course, you get a bit of muzzle flash with H110 loads. Both of mine are equipped with the S&W 500 X Frame Hogue grips.

Here are some chronograph results:

Chronoed these from the 2.75” M69. Three rounds at 5 Long paces from muzzle and 68 deg F. Larger sample could change the results a bit. Largest ES was 42 fps.
260 WFNGC w/23.0gr H110 avg 1,125 fps
240 Zero JSP with 23.5gr H110 avg 1,126 fps
240gr Fed Factory avg 1,125 fps
265gr CSWCGC (Lyman Thompson) with 17.5gr A2400 (Deep Seat) 1,119 fps avg
325gr WLNGC (BTB) with 22.0gr H110 avg 1,104 fps

For comparison purposes these were shot a while back from my 4 ¼” M69: Same temp, distance from the muzzle.
260 WFNGC w/23.0gr H110 avg 1,224 fps
240 Zero JSP with 23.5gr H110 avg 1,230 fps
240gr Fed Factory avg 1,220 fps
265gr CSWCGC (Lyman Thompson) with 17.5gr A2400 (deep seat) 1,140 fps avg
325gr WLNGC (BTB) with 22.0gr H110 avg 1,182

New front lockup on 2 ¾” (vs orig M69 4 ¼”). Ball detent is on the frame and locks up on/in back of crane/yoke (don’t know exact config as I haven’t disassembled cyl/yoke assy yet).

50 yard target shot over my range bag — 2 ¾” M69, 260gr WFNGC, 23.0gr H110.

Found a .44 Special level load for my 2 3/4" M69 that hits same POI at 25 yds as my .44 Mag Load (260 WFNGC w/23.0 H110).

Load consists of Matt's Bullets 265gr SWCGC (432244) sized .431, deep seated (crimped over front dr band) in Top Brass .44 Mag cases, over 7.7gr of H Universal, set off by CCI large pistol (standard) primers.

This little gun is a shooter.

Nice review!

I want one of these. I just can't justify it and I probably can't handle the recoil anyway.

Awesome report and great shooting! I have been really wanting the 4" version for a while! Do you know if the detent change was made to both versions? Is it considered better?

Don't know if the new lockup arrangement is being used on current 4 1/4" versions. I've had two 4 1/4" guns since early 2014. Shot over 8,000 rnds thru them and the old ball detent (v notch on ejecter shroud) has not been a problem (anecdotal, not statistically relevant). I suspect S&W will standardize once all unused assemblies have been consumed in production (just my guess of course).

The L Frame .44 Mag is a favorite of mine.

FWIW,

Paul

I am trying to avoid buying another gun. I now have two girls in college and I dont want them saddled with debt. They are working but that is where my money is going, then some person has to write up a excellent report on his Smith .44 ( a gun I have wanted for many years in snubby form). I think I am beginning to hate paul105. Okay I am seriously jealous....Please no more photos or range reports for at least 4 more years, on a nice Smith snubby .44. I may have to avoid all paul105 postings....... Just my wounded thoughts from the big sky country, Montana. Be safe all and keep your powder dry.

IMG_1368.JPG Like you, I have both Model 69's and carry them Fall / Winter. The 4-1/4" model 69 is my hunting side arm and the short barrel 2-3/4" model is EDC around the property during fall/winter months.

I replaced the sights on the long barrel model 69 above with XS Express Sights with the large bead tritium front night sight and white post rear since I took the picture. These sights are very quick to pick up. The holster is a Diamond D Guide's Choice chest rig. It is wearing the Sorbothane grips to better deaden recoil. I have it loaded with Buffalo Bore cast Keith style SWC-GC .44 magnums.

The 69 above is sharing photo time with my GP-100 in .44 Special. I replaced the 69's sights with a C&S rough country fixed rear and a small dot tritium night sight. I replaced it's factory grips with the Sorbothane grips sold by S&W for the .500 Magnum. It's loaded with Buffalo Bore 255 grain Kieth style cast SWC .44 Specials, as is the Ruger.

Yes, the ball detent is used in both models. I have both as well and really like both...different tools for different jobs.

Oops....reread your post. The long barrel 69's ball detent construction on mine is different than the short barrel model. The newer one on my short barrel model is supposed to be beefier but I've put a bunch of Magnums through the older one with no worries. Both are strong.

Justify??? What's that. ;) Aww, it's just another tool for the box......:D

Actually, with the Sorbothane grips, magnum recoil is very manageable. .44 Specials are very easy, all-day shooting. Actually, I get less muzzle flip with the 4.2" model 69 than with the heavier Performance Center 629. The L-Frame's barrel bore axis is lower and closer to my hand than with the higher profile N-Frame.

Haha justifying purchases is something poor people like me have to do. Which really just means making excuses for not being able to afford it! :(

Your post is making run out of excuses!

If recoil is an issue load up some 44 mag brass to 44 Spl. velocities and have fun.

I have a 69, a 29 and an Anaconda. I can't explain why but the recoil from the 69 is much more tolerable than the other two even with heavy loads. If I shoot a few cylinders of heavy loads in the 29 or Anaconda I feel it in my palm. I have no problems shooting heavy loads in the 69. I did change the factory grips to Hogue's and they are more comfortable than the original grips.

BTW besides shooting it the 69 is a pleasure to carry because of its size and weight.

.
Agreed, the M69s, with the Hogue 500X sorbothane grips are the softest recoiling .44 mags I've shot. I think part of it has to do with the lower bore to grip axis.

Where is best place to get the Hogue 500 Sorbothane grips?
Would like some for my M69 4".

You can also get the lanyard screw to replace the Sorbothane grip screw from S&W customer service. Just call them and add it to the grip order. Here's what mine looks like. I added the heavy duty split ring. A standard GI pistol lanyard fits the hole. I have a reproduction US M1909 braided leather lanyard that I use with mine. Definitely won't drop it with one. Here is a better picture of my Model 69 with the Sorbothane grips and lanyard screw. Also, this picture shows the XS Express Sights installed. They are NOT target sights, they are killing sights for nasty stuff coming at you fast & hard.

Thanks for the link on the grips! I was familiar with the smith store. Just thought there may be a less expensive outlet.

If you'll look at my avatar, you'll see a M329PD I had. I simply went to the hardware store and got a screw eye to match the threads on the Hogue grip adapter stirrup. Voila, lanyard ring, $0.50. I holster carry while accessing hunting areas by boat. I use the lanyard I made from braided camo nylon cord. Works great. I use a brass snap link to attach to revolver. Works with any Hogue grip.

The X frame grips are definitely the way to go. I have them on my 696 and they made the gun easy and accurate to shoot. The extra padding covering the back strap makes all the difference in the world.

These guns tend to shoot very high with soft loads but once you get them up to about 850 fps they start to shoot to the sights.

Mine is a joy to shoot and I carry it when out in the wilderness here in CA. Mernickle Holster and Belt works great too.

My standard load for this gun is 6.0 gr of W231 with a 260 gr Keith boolit. works great and is potent enough to deal with most issues. I actually hit 3 200 meter Silhouette Rams with mine a few weeks ago. Man sized target at 50 yards no problem.

Crowman, who makes the tritium front sight you have on the 69 in your second pic in post 9?
I have just realized how much I hate the factory sight but haven't found a good night sight with a flat top online.

Happy with my 4.25" M69. Great little shooter with Acme 240 gr coated over 7.5 gr of Unique for a softer shooting load.

XS Sight Systems: http://www.xssights.com/

Sight is http://www.xssights.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=993754&CAT=8373

Runs $110.00 but may get cheaper from MidwayUSA. It consists of both a shallow "v" adjustable rear sight insert, that replaces the factory rear sight insert, with white center post and a pin-on front sight with a big white circle with tritium insert.

This bad boy is great for fast shots at big "something wicked this way comes" situations. It is NOT a target sight. It is a woods / hunting carry weapon sight. Simple, just stand the circle on top of the post and let 'er rip, just like on Express rifles.

These 2.75” 69s are really attracting my attention. I have a 4.25” one now and wouldn’t mind a second.

I’m finding mine works well with Hogue rubber Bantam grips - they are perfect for my hand, and are very comfortable when shooting .44 Specials. They are tolerable with occasional Magnum shooting, too - no worse than the original grips.

I’m not a fan of S&Ws adjustable rear sights, I think they’re delicate and the sight picture is too busy which is getting worse as my eyes age. I replaced my rear with a Bowen Rough Country which has a plain, flat black blade with a sight picture very much like a Millett. I have a replacement front Partridge blade with a gold bead on order.

Well, I hate to do this too you, but here is another 44 Mag snub 629, 2.5" ported.
