What can you tell me about this Smith & Wesson Model 49? Is the only difference between the Model 38 and Model 49, is that the Model 38 - aluminum frame, and Model 49 - steel frame?

- serial # 601550
- stock wood grips not shown

Yes I believe so. 38 is alloy, 49 is steel, 649 is stainless. I actually find the bodyguard series very appealing.

Serial # 601550 falls in a production range between 1962 - 1969.

At some point in 1969, all J-Frame serial numbers begin to start with the J- prefix.

That's one beautiful Model 49 you've got there. I had a nickel Model 38 years ago; great carry piece. After I traded it on a Beretta, I found myself looking for another one to replace. That's when I came across this Model 649, shortly after they were introduced by S&W. And even though it weighs a little more, it's still one of my favorite choices for concealed carry.

Paid about $72 bucks for this one new in 1971.

My wife claimed it as her own about 5 minutes after I put the Herrett's stocks on it, in 1971!

Sometimes, she even lets me shoot it a little, and clean it a lot!:D
