My old (circa 1964) model 41 is having jams where the empty is crosswise over top of the new round entering th barrel. Suggestions on where to look?

Gummed up / dirty extractor spring & plunger hole?
Bolt face caked with powder & bullet lube?
Broken or worn slide stop/ejector?

At any rate, the first thing to do is give everything a really through cleaning & lube.
Then pay particular attention to the extractor hook as well as free movement.
Also check the slide stop/ejector for wear or a broken spring that holds it down until the empty magazine pushes it up.

Here is some pretty good info on tuning:

Make sure the gun is squeaky clean-especially the chamber.

Only use oil to lube the slide rails - not grease.

Take the firing pin block out of the slide and clean the firing pin tunnel and extractor/tunnel. To remove the block from the slide push the retaining pin out of the slide from right to left (while looking at the back of the slide). Be careful you do not lose the extractor, extractor spring or the firing pin or firing pin springs - they sometimes pop out vigorously.

Take the magazine (s) apart and clean it (them). You will be amazed how dirty they get.

To take the magazine apart just push the little tab in the base plate in and slide it forward. Watch out for the magazine spring it will come out like a snake in a can if you are not careful.

This link will show how to maintain your 41:
