Please inform me about the S&W Model 56. Prices, pics, identifying marks, distinguishing features. Is this the "Airforce .38"? How many survive?

You need to get hold of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson for all of that information. However they were produced in 1962 to 1963, . serial number range K500001 to K515205. Most were destroyed. however 4 are known to exist. Price 2500 to 7500 at auction.:)

S&W model 56 KTX-38 USAF (C&R)

Greeting's All-

Here is some additional information on the above referenced weapon:

Caliber: .38 S&W Special built on the square butt K target frame with
three screws. It has a 2" heavy barrel, target sights, 6-shot fluted
cylinder with a nominal length of 1.56". Continuing, blued finish, a
pinned barrel, walnut "diamond" Magna grips with S&W medallions. It
was the basis for the S&W model 15-2. Its "U.S." marked on the
smooth backstrap. Its believed that most were destroyed by the
government in Brunswick, GA; but this has never been confirmed.
Four are archieved in the Springfield Armory Museum N.H.S, and
are new in the box~! Produced from 1962 to 1963, and are of
exceptional military preference to collectors.

In April of '06, a S&W model 56 in "very good 85-90%" condition
and auctioned by Rock Island Auction brought $4600~! :scrutiny:

Beware of fakes!

There are a bunch of counterfeit M-13 Aircrewman floating around that are good enough to fool even some S&W experts.
