Been looking over a S&W model 58 as a medium bore pack gun. Who has one and how do you like it?

A fixed sight collector gun. Consider a 57 or 657. The 58 is re-issued now. If you want fixed sights, consider the reissue, it does have the lock though.

A gun without a real purpose the 58 was a poor seller. Now it has achieved cult status and prices are ridiculous for what the gun is.

The 41 can't do anything the 44 can't do better. The fixed sights limit the gun's usefulness. A 29 or 57 would be a better choice for general use.

I have a police trade in 58 that I got in 1989 for $189. I bought it as a curiosity and never did figure out a good use for the revolver. They now sell for $700-$1,000 in most cases and for that you can get a better gun for your purposes.

I bought this one in 1966 NIB for $81.00. I carried it as a duty sidearm as a LEO for 13 years. I had to use it on several occasions.

It is an effective combat sidearm and the .41 mag is a viable hunting round in the right circumstances.

I've got lots of guns, but this one will be the last to go.

If you can get it for a bargain price, and if you reload and already have 41 mag components, it's a great gun for packing.
(41 mag ammo can be hard to come by and is rather pricey.)

But if you're attracted to it because of its romantic appeal, there are many others I'd choose first.

Mine looks just like the one in SaxonPig's picture and I got it at a pawn shop back in the early 80s for $170.

Mine shot very well with factory Rem 210gr SWCs...especially after I have the action worked over by Bill Davis' shop. I just have a thing for large caliber oddball revolvers. For a while it was my nightstand gun, until it was replaced in that role by a Mag-Na-Ported M-696 tuned by Randy Lee
