i carry the full power remington 125gr. magnums in my 640-1, but i had it magna-ported so it kicks like a +p .38spl....

You've already posted the pluses and minuses and that should make up your mind for you. If not, you need to shoot both and decide which you prefer. It's probably just a gut feeling.
I have nothing against a Ruger, but my S&W is a 3" -- looks right, feels right, shoots right (at least for me -- I can't believe S&W is losing by over 1%).

I have not read thru this entire post. I went with the Ruger for the following reasons:

1. Neither is a pocket gun. Both, imo, require a holster.

2. Since they both require a holster, I'd choose the one that is slightly heavier and easier to shoot.

3. The Ruger is also more durable and easier to maintain and clean.

I own and like both! :)
The only thing I would add to what MCgunner said pertains to perceived recoil. The S&W MOD 60 in .357 Mag is substantially more uncomfortable to shoot than the Ruger SP101 in .357 Mag due to the fact that is does not absorb or redirect recoil as well as the Ruger SP101 design. This makes a big difference to those with small hands and or small wrists.
