S&W No-Lock Classics

I really do not need another Model 19 but I've been thinking about getting one of the current versioins to get the improved frame and barrel deign. The no lock feature on the new run of S&W Classics, which includes a Model 19, may push me over the fence on this to try out.

I cracked the forcing cone on my vintage Model 19-4 after a steady diet of full power 158 gr JHP ammunition but I enjoyed shooting the K-Frame sized 357 Magnum. My Model 19-4 sees only 38 Special+P level loads these days. It would be fun to enjoy shooting 357 Magnum loads again in a Model 19.

You got to give them an A for removing the "hole" I personally sold my new model 686+ and 586 in favor of my new model Colts. Not because of the "Hole" but because of the out of the box triggers and accuracy. No I'm not a Colt fan boy as I do have some older model Smiths that are sweet...

Marred screws…and right in the open where a QA/QC inspector would notice it pretty much right off the bat.
The new .32 Mag with the Titanium cylinder had buggered screws in the email press release I got. Very disappointed in that. I figured if they would be sending out up close up pics of a brand new exclusive gun, they would have ensured the screw were good to go......

I learned the hard way that S&W does a bang-up job on their side plate screws. Both my new Model 642 and Model 340 came with buggered up screws! I ordered a full new set of sideplate screws from S&W, and figured I'll just put them in myself since they supposedly have Bubba J working on their assembly line. Imagine my surprise when the brand new, factory fresh screws, which had never even been touched by a screwdriver, were buggered up as well! 😲
Turns out, S&W just can't make screws... I think they drive the groove cutting bit through the head too fast, which deforms/pushes the metal rather than cutting it clean. Thier screws start out looking like junk from the moment they are made. Only the yoke screw looked good, since that is MIM rather than machined. So, a damaged yoke screw really is the doing of Bubba J.

My solution, I got aftermarket S&W sideplate screws from TheGunGarage on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/str/thegungarage

These screws are absolutely perfect!

I wonder if S&W representatives ever look at forums to determine how their customers feel about them and their products?
The same goes for the rest of the gun companies.
My guess is the answer is “No”.
An interesting question, Pat. The companies are foolish if they don't have a look. They will waste some time with half baked opinions, (as is true of virtually everything on line), but there is really valuable feedback on many forums.
I will tell you this; Taurus/Rossi was horsing me around (literally months) about replacement screws for a buddy's older, Rossi snub. Weary of the runaround, a told them I was a moderator on one gun board, and active on others. Said I'd bad mouth them from here to Christmas. Miraculously, they came up with the screws, promptly. Had to pay for them, but still... 🙄

🤣 Good move!

The new-look guns appear to be nice renditions of their iconic guns. There are a couple I would enjoy owning/shooting.

Sadly, none will be available for sale for quite a while, if ever, in gun roster states. I probably won’t get to try them out anytime soon. 😖

Stay safe.

These were announced at SHOT last week. They had a lot of promise, and were gloated over with a lot of fanfare from the usual suspects. Incredibly, someone was able to buy one at retail this week, and go shooting with it. You be the judge. Not unexpected, sadly.

S&W 10 No Lock First Look

The old ones can be found for substantially less. The least they could do is recess the cylinder to accept moon clips like they do on PC guns.🙄

An unfortunate review, and not encouraging at all. I wish Smith and any American manufacturer well, but other than the accuracy, which appears to be okay, I see way too many issues and turn-offs for that gun to appeal to me. How could they let this gun out of the factory? Buggered screw heads, mainspring tension screw sits too proud and seems to be off-center in the recess, the turn line is already as bad or worse than my 1983 model 586 (was this after only one outing at the range?), some type of crap or discoloration on the side of the trigger and hammer, light strikes, some type of issue with one of the chambers causing blow-back,... Looks too much like a cheap knockoff compared to any of my early/mid-eighties no-lock Smiths.

I'll add to that dreadful, cheap-looking grips and, even though the lock is gone, they retained the fat-looking frame profile that hides most of the hammer.
A day late and many dollars too much, I'm aftraid.

Chemically rifled barrel liner pressing into an outer barrel shell? No thanks, never bought German RHOMs cause of that gross barrel liner cost-cutting, at least they pinned them in after pressing. Bad enough when they quit pinning threaded barrels. Its not like they sell for Iver Johnson prices.
Not that buggered heads on this 4 screw ROHM .38 of the 60s . revolver.Rohm West German manufacturer, not Import stamped, 1967 date code. Pre-RG38. Zamak Zinc alloy frame, sight rib, barrel shroud, and thumb latch with steel barrel, cylinder assembly, trigger, hammer, and internal parts, with brown polymer grips. 3 inch barrel; screw on blade front, fixed rear notch. .195 trigger & hammer. Cylinder times on full cock, but no lateral play. 4 1/4 single action pull. 9 3/8 inches length, 5 inches height, and 1 1/2 inches cylinder thickness. Weight empty is 31 ounces. Brushed surface blued steel with gloss black alloy. Minimal carbon and moderate surface detractions: wear on right side and on grip frame
