I would assume that this can't be applied to used products?

Short sighted if true. Dealers will be able to advertise comparable guns from other manufacturers at lower prices. That is likely to cut into SW’s sales.

More interested in the "why" and "who"
Is behind this. Could easily lead the way to banned I'net sales.

I can see S&W controlling their distributors, if they want. But a ffl dealer cant be controled by the factory, as i see it? Unless the dealer gets guns directly from the factory?

Years ago, a distributor had to pick between S&W or Ruger. Didnt last long. Later, One distributor made a dealer buy 3 Rugers to get 1 S&W. Rugers were discounted. S&W M29-2s sold for $100 over list price.

The only things they currently make that interest me are the M&P rifles. I don't see the logic in this policy, if it's true.

This is not some big scary anti-gun issues. Manufacturers in all industries set constraints on how you are able to sell their products. The post says dealers are not allowed to sell on line or go below their minimum price. Again, not uncommon. When I worked retail, many years ago, all of the firearms we sold had minimum prices set by the manufacturer. If we went below that with out their blessing, they could cancel our account with them. The minimum price is usually somewhere between MSRP and wholesale. Usually closer to the wholesale end. So this is not some vast conspiracy, but most likely S&W trying to get some dealers back in line.

MAP pricing has always been a thing. Dealer - Distributor - Factory - got contracts to adhere by. Now a private sellers can do whatever they want.

Read the post, it says nothing about Amazon auctions. And all the accessory pieces like Crimson Trace can be and are sold on there.

I recall something like this years ago with BUDs
Something about Buds LEO discount count not sell to people in Florida. Some Fl dealer complained to SW that they could not compete with Buds and all the retired LEOS in the State. (something like this, don;t quote me)

I believe it, they make deals all the time. S&W is there to make as much money is possible and that includes making dealers happy

If a company has a Minimum Advertised Price, it isn't much good if dealers circumvent it by selling through another site. I don't like MAPs, but producers have the right to impose them currently, and enforce them by refusing to supply additional goods. There is no obligation on anyone who does not sign the dealer agreement, and no way to enforce other than cutting off supply.

I mean I am not a huge fan of the idea of MAP and UMRP pricing schemes, but in practice I support them. The reality is brands that don’t use MAP or UMRP schemes go bankrupt after they get stuck in the price/promotion downward spiral. This phenomenon directly contributed to the downfall of RCA (Radio Corporation of America) for those that are old enough to remember them.

and the reality for any suitably large brand with multi channel distribution is it’s not a matter of if it will happen but when it will happen. It’s just an unreasonable risk to ask brands to face the price/promotion spiral when it is completely avoidable with MAP pricing schemes.

Just like ole honest Abraham Lincoln said, “don’t believe every thing reported I said on the internet is true.”
