About 4 months ago I bought a S & W model 22. This is a thunder ranch, blued and wood (like revolvers should be) 45ACP revolver.
Obviously it uses moon clips.

I got like two loads in adn could never get them unloaded.
arrrrggggghhhh:banghead:

I ordered a bunch of moonclip stuff from Brownells'
It's been sitting in the closet, I'm getting ready to go off to Larry's for a THR gathering and I think I should bring this. (even Standing Wolf might like it)

So, I dig all the moonclips and tools out.
I sit down to load them on the table. (so i look like I know what i"m doing tomorrow)

I put all the rounds in the machine I drop the moonclip on and they don't line up.
***? :scrutiny:
I take the moonclip out
I put it back in
It doesn't line up
I take the moonclip out and I put it on the table and I count holes for the rounds to go in.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8:eek:
8????????
Why does this have 8? I still have no real idea.
I do now know why I couldn't get the .45ACP on though because these moonclips are obviously not for a .45ACP 6 shot revolver like I have.
Luckily I have some other moonclips I bought that are correct so it's still coming for tomorrow's shoot.
I feel pretty stupid though.
So, count the number of holes in the gun and make sure they match the number of holes in the moonclips before you start.:D

ETA fixing clarity of original post.

I wonder which 8 shot .45 revolver takes Moon Clips??

Even without them you can still shoot the 22-4, just make sure that you have a pencil/dowel dod/cleaning rod to poke the empties out.

DA....

The Thunder Ranch model 22's I've handled all had six (6) chambers in the cylinder, and I don't believe there is room for any more. Eight (8) shot .357's, yes - .45's, I don't think so...:scrutiny:

I guess I wasn't clear (stupid internet, why can't it know what I"m thinking?)

They obviously can't be .45's moonclips and that's why I couldn't get them in.
Must be smaller than that.
I have no idea what they fit, but it isn't a Model 22 and it's probably not 45ACP cuz you cannot get a 45 in there no matter how big of hammer you use.

I forget the model for the moment, But S&W did make an 8-shot/N-frame revolver, chambered in .38 Super. I suspect your clips would fit them.

As pointed out, you can shoot the revolver without using clips, and punch out the fired cases with a pencil or something similar. However the clips also headspace the cartridges, and without them you may get light firing pin hits and/or misfires. On the other hand the gun might work fine.

Fuff, 627 is what you are looking for, most I have seen have been PC models complete with compensator but there are a few vanilla models out there.....

Bozeman, I bought one just like it today.

I'm in Wisconsin, which means that I have to wait 48 hours to pick it up. :barf:

You advised,

Ah, it's good to come here and learn all of the esoterica... :D

If you were close, I'd swap you some nicely loaded proper clips for those 8 rd clips you have. Meant for the 627/327 'Times 8' revolvers, they are considerably more dear than the 'proper', and much more available, .45 ACP 'clips. You could also use some .45 Auto Rims less those 'clips - their rim is thick enough to headspace properly. All of the 22/25/625's will take them. Check 'georgia-arms.com', they make them in lead and JHP. I reload, so I have 230gr FMJ .45 ACP's @ 800 fps from my 4" 625JM moonclipped for 'fun'; and 255gr LSWC, typically a .45 Colt bullet, at 750-880 fps in the .45 AR cases. The 22/25/625 were designed for the 22kpsi .45 ACP, where the standard .45 Colt is 14kpsi, so my 625JM gets 'hotter' 255gr LSWC's than my 625MG's in .45 Colt. Obviously, your 22's fixed sight will limit it's accuracy with a wide variation in velocities/bullet mass.

Actually, I tried the 8rd 'clips on my PC 627 V-Comp - they are picky as to brass, easily bent, expensive, and... hard to line up those eight long cartridges. My 625JM and some 'clipped .45 ACP's is fast! Enjoy your neat 22.
