Anyone ever had the sabot melt into distorted strip from a 50cal muzzle loader? Using 80gr of 777 powder and a no. 11 cap.
Gotta go shoot some more, sightin because elk season is now.

MMP has a "ballistic bridge sub-base" that's placed under the sabot as an "Additional Gas Seal, Cushion/protection of Sabot Base, Improved Accuracy!"
I've heard of the Savage smokeless guns needing them with the higher pressure powders.
Maybe the sabot distortion is caused by a combination of pressure and heat?

The ballistic bridge sub-base is listed at the bottom of the product page.

777

CVA Buckhorn with standard Fiber optical sights (I do not own a telescope sight) I use 70 Gr 777, and one of those new Hornady easy load 250Gr. Sabots. Put 4 shots in a 3" circle at 50 yd. next, tried the 100 yd target. Aimed high, thinking I would have some drop off, and was off the paper (8½ x 11 sheets- I print my own) second shot a little lower - still just nipped top of paper. 3rd shot - in the 6" red circle - 4th shot in the yellow 3" center, still an inch high of center. Don't know what else to add. Never had a sabot melt in 2 years, using 777. Every rifle has its own "sweet load". keep trying

heck, i have shot plastic saboted bullets over 130 grains (by volume) of 777 several times. found the sabots on the way to look at the target. they all looked normal. i dont think triple 7 is your problem. now, something i have tried is a very light coating of bore butter on the outside of the sabot when you load it. makes it slide in slicker than gorrilla snot.

I have to agree with moose - I've sent hundreds of sabots downrange with 777, Pyro, CleanShot, Clearshot, etc and NEVER seen a saot look as you describe. But most all I have shot where the better MMP sabots - which could make a difference though.

My standard load now is 80gr of 777 (2fg) with a 300gr bullet, and have shot up to 100gr of 3fg 777 with 400gr sabots with great accuracy and zero issues with the sabots.

It the gun gets very hot from firing the sabot can melt or soften in the barrel if the gun is not quickly fired. Usually this happens in hot weather.
