I just thought y'all might get a good smirk out of this. I am out of town working in Louisiana and at the hotel I'm trying to look at AK slings and this is what I get......:banghead:

Personally, if I hadn't been in the room overnight yet, I'd get my money back (less the obvious cancellation fee) and find a 2nd Amendment friendly hotel. I've never had a problem with Holiday Inn, Red Roof Inn, or even Super 8

I'd also make sure to let the management know WHY I was cancelling.

I'm guessing it was the hotel's connection. Keep in mind that a lot of web filters have "weapons" listed in them, because parents might want to keep their kids from looking up weapons (regardless of whether or not you agree) and if the hotel just set it up as-is then they might not have realized the issue. They may even have de-selected it, but it got re-selected automatically during a product update.

Wait...the hotel's WEB FILTER tells you to "remain calm and proceed to the nearest exit..."?

Huh! I believe I would!

Yea this is the wifi deal here at the hotel. That is a screen shot of my laptop. It's a microtel. Believe it or not a super nice hotel and a Jacuzzi room to boot! It just gets annoying that I can't look at my sites on my laptop. I have to use my phone I guess. Already payed for two weeks so refunds are kind of out of the question. Oh well might as well educate my fellow gun enthusiasts

I'd at least make an attempt to remedy the situation with the hotel management - The only difference between paying for 2 days and 2 weeks is the amount of money the hotel stands to lose when you request a refund and find a different room in a different hotel. I'd be willing to bet that if the hotel has an IT guy on staff they'll be willing to make the change, at least for your particular access point.

I would ask them to open up the filters as well. And if not, leave. Much less as a 2nd amendment thing, but a freedom of speech thing. The default should be 'off', allowing a parent to turn it 'on' at purchase. If they're policy is 'off' unless (or whether) you ask, that's dangerously close to my free speech line.

I've never found a hotel running a content filter... Of course the wifi usually sucks so bad that I just end up tethering to my smart phone so I may have just never noticed.

I ran into the exact same situation when I went to Vegas for SHOT this year. My hotel (not one of the big ones) had a web filter and blocked about a third of the gun sites I tried to go to. I complained to the front desk, who escalated me to a manager, who had the filter disabled for me by the time I got back on the second day.

Talk to the front desk, then the manager, if you need to.
I'm not sure about recent software, but it used to be that antivirus/firewall suites for networks like what a hotel would use often came with content filters, some of which defaulted to 'on' unless someone went through and turned parts or the whole thing off.
Like leaving Google's Safesearch checked on.

Tell them that you didn't order parental controls, you'd better not be charged for them and please turn them off now. Bambi and Destiny aren't going to wait forever. ;)

Wow I also work in LA and as many others have posted would be at the front desk and speaking to a manager if necessary right away. ESPECIALLY if I was going to be there for two weeks. Any chance you'll hint at the name or location so I can be sure to steer my business to a more freedom friendly establishment?

So if your a businessman who makes a living dealing with weapons and accessories, etc, you cannot do your business while staying there? Firearms companies, dealers, wholesalers, police and swat teams, military, and gun event people. Seems like a lot of hotel/motel business to scare away...............

Push comes to shove, try checking through Google for a proxy site.
A lot of filters block them now, but it's still possible to find a sneaky one.
Used to play Flash games at school by going through a proxy...

I'd speak with the manager, and ask them to turn the filter off. If he refuses, I'd start looking for another hotel - and I'd start that search by asking what he recommends.

I believe Microtel is franchised, so this would be a local issue and not necessarily an issue with all Microtels.
