I've had an AR with A2 front sight and clamshell handguard for a few years, and finally decided to convert it to a free float rail.

I had a heck of a time removing the gas block taper pins. I'm talkin two hours of trying to gently grind the heads of the pins and then tapping (read: banging the hell out of) the pins with zero movement whatsoever. I finally gave up and said I'll cut the gas block off completely, and if I damage the integrity of the barrel, I'll replace it with the appreciation for not trying to repeat this procedure in the future, but I’d already passed the point of no return.

So I got it the A2 front sight/gb off, and found that the taper pins were bored pretty deeply (at least a lot deeper than I expected) into the barrel.

Is it safe to just replace the gas block and keep using this barrel? It's a factory barreled upper from a well known company, and I've never had any issue with it or my other uppers by the same co, but this is the first time I've ever seen a barreled upper with the A2 front sight removed. Are they all like this?

Tried searching the net and couldn't find anything. Maybe I'm not using the correct terms.

I appreciate any help. And yes, I did scratch the barrel with my Dremel like an idiot, but now that I’ve seen the depth these pins were cut in at, I'm thinking those marks I made are inconsequential in terms of structural integrity.

Not an gunsmith, but my vote would be for OK. Distal on the barrel like that; yeah, I'd put a new block on it and shoot.

Evidently a friend of a friend is an actual gunsmith, and said this is normal and how they’re supposed to be installed. Other than cosmetically butchering it (even though it will be hidden beneath the new rail), totally safe to shoot. Guess I’m officially a fudder of guns. For shame.

What brand is it?
I didn’t want to unintentionally imply anything bad about the company based on my own lack of knowledge of the pins. I have a lot of respect for the company - not just their work but what they stand for. I’d rather not say, but if there’s some specific reason you’re wondering, shoot me a DM and I’ll help how I can.

Might make a difference if you are dumping $500 out of a full auto routinely, but not for the average shooter.

Shoot it and save up for a nicer barrel.
Actually full auto mag dumps would be the best use of that barrel. Cause it'll get shot out faster that way, and then you can replace it. Even good quality ar barrels are cheap, and this is just a cosmetic problem. Lot of metal there still.

Cosmetic.

Blast away!

BTW, I've changed a lot FSB's for a lot of people, including many guys from our local SRT (Special Response and Tactics)and county SWAT and those taper pins can be a stone cold bitch to knock out!!

Lol glad to hear it’s not just me. I’m a pretty big guy and I was concerned that if I hit them any harder, I’d bend the barrel or cause some other damage.

If you can run it fast enough to heat the barrel cherry red, it's time to replace it. It takes lots of loaded mags sitting stacked in front of you, and decent speed at mag changes. I had to burn up the excess ammo drawn for qualifying, and since I ordered the ammo, I always made sure we had more than enough.

I thought they were tapered pins and only come out one way
