im debaiting on geting one of these and was wondering what kinda of accuracy people are getting out of them? are these worth the money or would i be better served with a savage bolt action?

it will be for plinking, deer hunting, and target practice. yardage will be from about 150yds out to 600yds, mostly open field and minor brush.
 
these are wonderful, fantastic, absolutely worth every penny. Now then, I have not fired the nicey ones, with the long bbl, and the wood furniture, but I have the short bbl versions, with the regular plastic furniture. With most former empire milsurp ammo, plus the S. american nazi ammo, It was quite accurate, and after a while, I just dropped scoping it, there was just no need for it, as I was not going to long range target shoot it, or snipe or varmint with it.
But it was again , wonderfully accurate, and for under 350 bucks, it is double tought to beat.
 
Mine is a converted Saiga 308 with 16" barrel and 8X PSOP optics. I've been getting about 1 MOA with Winchester Ballistic Silvertips. With SA surplus, I can expect about 1 1/4-1 1/2 MOA.

I hunt at the same ranges you specificed but I do prefer a scope to iron sights for more clarity of what I am shooting at.


All in all a Saiga 308 isn't going to beat the accuracy of a Savage w/accutrigger-- or practically any decent bolt action. It's just a function of the mechanics.

But for 150 yard shots, you're gonna hit accurately with a Saiga 308 and/or the Savage.

Why are all your countries target rifles and hunting rifles showing up here in the States?
Was there some massive change in the gun laws over there or,,,,,,,,,,,,?
 
No idea about the competition and hunting rifles. However, you can get a non-Bubba'd m/96 up here for $60. As a result, there's a handful of Americans going around buying up every used Swedish Mauser they can find. Actually, decent used hunting rifles are pretty darn cheap, too, if you know where to look.

The gun laws aren't too bad, and won't really cause you trouble unless you're into military-pattern weapons or live far from a shooting club.
 
I have one that is not modified. The accuracy is very satisfying right out of the box with the 16 inch bbl. It's no target rifle. It would make an excellent hunting rifle unless you plan to make extreme long range shots. I have nothing scientific to back up my claims. I just know I can put a lot rounds on the 200 yard gong at my range. I love this little rifle and it shoots and feels good. I use premium ammo and it helps with the accuracy a bit.
 
I've got a 16" converted Saiga and it's fairly accurate with ammo that it likes, but not a tack driver. If I give the barrel a few minutes to cool between shots I can get consistent sub 2 MOA groups with one particular type of ammo. If I let the barrel warm up they open up to 3 MOA. Mine doesn't like either South African or Portuguese surplus and shoots about 5 MOA with those. The ammo that it really likes comes in a blue cardboard box that says simply ".308 Winchester" on it and it appears to be corrosive. I had a coworker of mine sell a couple hundred rounds of it to me cheap and then I found a couple hundred more at a gun show. The guy selling it said he thought it was Sellier & Bollet, but he wasn't sure. Oddly enough it shoots that stuff better than Federal Gold Medal Match. Someday I'll work up a handload for it and see what it's really capable of.
