i saw a savage 10xp3 .308 cal with accu trigger and a scope mounted for sale at walmart for $ 394. the cheapest savage .308 cal with accu trigger that i have seen in their online catalog was over $ 600 and didn't even come with a scope. that's a huge price difference!!! why are they that cheap? is there anything wrong with or different about the rifle sold at walmart? does anybody has one of those?
do they perform as well as the "regular" ones ?

i think u should grab it. that is a good price.people complain about wallmart guns but they work. now a 770 it is what it is weater it is from wally or a shop.

It has a cheaper stock and finish on the metal, but is still the same action, barrel, and trigger as the more expensive Savages. That is a heck of a price, almost as cheap as the Axis. And a Remington 770 shouldn't even be mentioned in the same thread as a Savage model 10!

They have Savage Axis/Edge .308's here at WM for $257.

They have 10 GLXP3's in most short action calibers for $367 with the scope. I bought one right on the spot. You can't buy a better gun for the coin.

Yep, as others said, they are great rifles, and I'd highly recommend them. I have quite a few friends that have bought them, and every one of them has shot amazing. I'd expect sub moa groups right out of the box, not to mention a great trigger.

The finish on the metal seems to be the same as other models that I've handled, so I don't see a difference there. If there is a difference I didn't notice it.

The stock is cheaper feeling and a little flimsy in the end, but the regular Model 10's and Model 11's I've handled elsewhere have had a similar stock, it's just that some of the tactical models have had a better sturdier stock on them, or some of the wood stocked models of course are sturdier.

IMO this rifle is hands down the best value for the money on the market right now. I don't understand why people even consider the Savage Axis/Edge, Mossbergs, Remington 710/770, or even the 700's, or any of the other budget rifles when you can get this rifle that's much better than all of them for a budget rifle price.

The only thing I might would ditch with this rifle is the scope. I see they are now coming with mostly Bushnells. I've had one of those Bushnells and it was the biggest POS scope I've ever had. It worked, but the adjustments were horrible, the glass sucked, and all around it just sucked. The one I had was on a .22 and I sold it.

I know they used to come with the Simmons Blazer and that's what everyone I know with one has. They seem to work and have pretty decent glass. Most of my friends still use these on them, and years later they are still holding up just fine. I also had one myself and it seemed decent, up upgrading to better glass. To me glass wise it seemed to be on par with the Nikon Prostaff.

So if you have the option, I'd pick the one with the Simmons Blazer. If you don't have the option it's still a heck of a deal with the Bushnell, and you may like it better than I did. If not, you should be able to sell it easily.

They are cheaper because Walmart buys by the train load.

Bingo, buying power=large quantities=lower cost, sometimes it's passed on to the consumer sometimes not.;)

thanks for your input. that low price really had me wondering and since i believe that everybody invloved in providing this gun for sale wants to make a buck, from the supplier to the retailer, i was speculating about the ways they could have cut down on the cost per rifle to create this bargain. (for example: cheaper labor, cheaper material, cheaper manufacturing tools, a high volume prodution, or who knows what else... - i guess we'll never know about all those company secrets) anyways: since the performance doesn't seem to suffer, i guess it's all good. thanks again.

If you decide to sell Savage right after you bough it, guns-shops would probably give you 150 bucks for it tops... its only worth buying because of the action you getting, then you need to change its stock, barrel and trigger, then you will have superb shooter ;-) Don't forget to bush its bolt face as well ;-)

What does that have to do with the one at Walmart? If you bought that model anywhere, gun shops would likely give you the same for a trade in, not to mention anyone that sells guns to gunshops is getting ripped off horribly in the first place.

As for having a superb shooter, everyone I've shot has shot well under 1" groups with cheapo Winchester Power Point and Federal Power Shok ammo, and that's in stock form with everything original including the Simmons scope on top. The ones handloads have been tried in have shot .5" and under groups at 100 yards once a load it really likes is found.

Some guys buy these to do builds with, while others shoot them like they are and do just fine.

While the stock isn't the best stock in the world, for hunting, or most of what the majority of people will do with it, it's fine. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the barrel, and if this was going to be a hunting rifle, I'd not want a heavy barrel on it, and this one is perfect as it's lightweight while still accurate. The trigger? I along with thousands if not millions of other users think the Accu Trigger is a great trigger, so I'm not really sure why you'd change that. That being said, these sell for around $300-350 used in this area all of the time, so if you wanted to sell it, I'd bet you could get in that range, not $150.

it will do just fine for hunting, but I was talking about competition shooting... My recent target and varmint rifles from savage wouldn't group as they should, but they do shoot like hunting rifles, but that's not why I bought them, also both barrels were defective...

I bought one of those Savage specials in 270 win. Solid rifle all around performs as well as can be hoped for, mabey a little better 1 1/2" groups with med-high winds, less then perfect shooting and factroy fodder ammo. Feeding is like all savages, clunky but reliable and consistant. The stock is like darn near all synthetic stocks out there flimsy crap, but it does fit real nicely. The factory recoil pad was REALLY NICE better then some aftermarket ones I have used, sure made that lightweight 270 into a pussycat.. The rings and scope are functional but that is all. Don't expect great clearity, or low light visiability, go ahead and budget for a Nikon Prostaff and Weaver rings :)
This is the 5th Savage I have owned, only one mechanical issue in the bunch and that was a very, old very used 987 semi auto that went FULL AUTO on me at a public shooting range!!! LOL

Winner! That model is particular to Wal-Mart. They are only available in .243 and .308 for the short actions and .30-06 and .270 for the long. Limit the options and buy in huge volume to take advantage of economies of scale.

The finish is the same. The stock is the standard, non-Accustock, polymer stock and they come with the Accutrigger. I've used two of them as the basis for custom rifles (and recycled the barrels to a left-handed action for hunting use). They work just fine and the barrel that I moved to the other action has proven to be a good shooter with 10-shot rapid-fire groups using cheap Federal soft points printing a group about the size of a 50 cent piece.
