It's a good price. Keep in mind that if you plan on replacing the scope mount bases, you'll have to ensure that you get pre-accutrigger style bases as the newer receivers are different on the rear (rounded versus the earlier flat style).

OK, well I bought it, and it just came in...I haven't had a chance to shoot it because I was busy today...

I've heard from some people that the simmons 3-9-40 scope is junk.

What is wrong with it? I know its a cheap scope, but what does it do that makes it suck? Lose zero easily?

I really know pretty much nothing when it comes to scopes so any input would be great.

Also, if I really hate this scope then I will probably buy the 10x super sniper...I asked a question about this awhile back and I like the price and the opinions on this particular scope as well.

I'll also need scope mounts...This rifle is pre accutrigger, so what mount bases will I need to get and where

My experience with a Simmons 3-9x40 has been quite positive. My complaints with scopes in general revolve around eye relief which is a problem between my neck and most scope bases and not the scope itself. Most of what everybody says seems to me to be just griping to read their own gripes. Enjoy.
 
As far as bases go, there are lots of good ones available. Just be sure when you order or buy in person, that they are for the older-style receiver.

Of course, those bases are probably just fine. I would keep them and change them out only if you have a reason to do so.

I see a lot of " scope snobs " out there who feel that a scope is worthless if it cost less than your rifle . Now i admit that as a general rule in life you get what you pay for , some rifles and some scopes are cheaper than they should be . For myself any scope that holds zero will actually work better than i can shoot on any given day , especially in the field . I can usually shoot into a 6" group at 100 yards ( standing on my hind legs unslung ) depending on my blood sugar , mood , tobacco usage , and i guess the sign of the moon . If i sling up , set down , or find other means of support groups shrink dramatically . I am not the best shot , nor are my guns camp perry ready , however i have a history of hitting what i shoot at ( partly since i limit the range i shoot at ) . If you want really little groups at a known range then be prepaired to spend mega bucks on a rifle , if you want a good shooter which will serve you well then be prepaired to buy another scope , tho most likely you wont need to .
 
Well, like every other time I've ever bought a gun, its raining so I won't be able to test it out today.

I did take'r apart and clean'r and she is darn near mint cond...There is one little spot on top of the barrel, but thats about it. The stock is perfect and the bore is mint.

Now I just have to find out how well she shoots.:)


Thanks for all of the reply's guys. I hope you are right and I don't have to buy another scope. I have some money put away for a garand when my buddy gets them in and would hate to break into that fund.:)

Edit: One more thing. I just bought a bore snake for it and got it in there about an inch and couldn't pull it through anymore...It took just about all of my strength to pull it back out the other way as well(its the right size).

Whats the prob?

nothing that the average shooter will ever notice.
folks out there that are used to using glass with a price tag around $1K will notice a lack of clarity or that the adjustments may not be as precise/repeatable, but one shouldn't expect to get race car performance out of their daily driver.

is the scope up to what the rifle can do, probably not, but teh real question as redneckrepairs alludes to is whether your skills are such that the scope limits you. and again for most shooters (me amoung 'em) the answer is no.

enjoy your rifle and see for yourself if the scope is adequate to your needs/wants.
 
If you really don't like it, you can always stick a new barrel in a different caliber on itin 30 minutes. My Shilen 6.5x47 Lapua comes in tomorrow, and I'm putting it on an old 30-06.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm pretty sure I want it to stay chambered in 30.06.

I'm going to have some daylight left after school, so I will more than likely go to the range this afternoon and find out how much I like it.

How well does the greek surplus from CMP shoot? I ordered some and it should be coming in any time. Just curious so I know if its the rifle or the ammo if its not shooting good(I also have some other new stuff I bought as well that I will use to sight it in anyway).
