I have a Savage 99 in 250 Savage. The serial # is 6542xx. I was wondering what year it was made; the best answer I have found so far is,"after 1950."

I also have 2 questions about the barrel. Did Savage ever stamp them 250 Savage, or were they always stamped 250-3000? And, what is the rate of twist of my barrel?

Lastly do some of the more recently manufactured rifles like the Savage 110 or Ruger M77 Internetional have a different rate of twist geared more toward modern bullet designs than my Mod. 99?

Thanks for any help.:)

The twist rate was 1-10". In case you didn't know - the designation 250-3000 wa s a marketing idea since this was the first factory load [with the 87 gr bullet] that had a velocity of 3000 fps.

All I have seen were marked ".250-3000". As mete says, the name was advertising hype.

The twist rate is based on a number of factors, like the bearing length of the bullet, the velocity and the weight. Factories choose the best twist for stability of any given bullet. There has been no magical improvement in bullet design since that rifle was made, and 1-10 twist is common in almost any rifle in the .25-35 caliber range.

Thanks for the twist info. I kinda figured that they kept the 250-3000 name just for the hype. I hadn't seen one marked 250 Savage either, but I was just wondering if someone else had.

I still have one of the red and green Rem. Cleanbore boxes of 250 Savage shells originally purchased with the rifle.

The box says 250 Savage, but all of the cases are stamped 250 HP.

Was this ever an early name for it?

:D Any help with the serial #/ manufarture date would be really appreciated.:D

IIRC, Savage used the .250 Savage High Power name before they came up with the catchier ".250-3000". They also used the High Power designation with the .22 Savage High Power, no longer made in the U.S., but still popular in Europe.
