Savage is on the block

The name supposedly comes from an orphan English boy. Powhatan demanded a hostage from the Jamestown settlers, and no one cared much about this boy so they handed him over. He loved being an Indian, and they doted on him. Other Englishmen called him "the savage" and the name stuck.

According to one version of the story, when he grew up, the Indians told him they knew he was really White, and they knew White men liked land -- so they gave him the Eastern Shore.

In any case, there are plenty of Savages in Virginia to this day and there is a Savage Island in Chesapeake Bay.

I don’t think so, at least not in this case. Arthur Savage started the Savage Arms company. He grew up in British Jamaica, before coming to the US. The surname has existed in Britain since the Middle Ages. The companies name also has nothing to do with the antiquated name for native people, even though some mistakenly think it does.

The company was built on the largely popular Savage 99 lever action. Arthur Savage also invented the radial tire.

I hope whoever buys Savage, comes out with a new production model 99.

Of course it would need tactical rails and a collapsible stock in 2018, but I’d buy one.

How do they pronounce their last name? I seem to recall that the firearm name is pronounced suh-VAHG (as with a French accent), not SAV-ag.

The left is always complaining about something. If they stopped complaining, something would be wrong - and we wouldn't have anything to ignore. :D

I wish the best for Savage and it's employees and dealers. They seem to make fine guns.

The history of US gun manufacturing is littered with brands that went bust.
Yup, lotsa old ones like Iver Johnson, Sharp’s...newer ones like Davis, Olympic Arms, AMT, Dan Wesson, etc. have died. Sone have been reincarnated in some form or another like DW...

And someone on another forum told me the firearms business isn't dying. :D

Savage really got wrapped up in AR-15's before the last election. Lots of people thought that Hillary was a shoe in. Well, now they're on the block. They built a lot of rifles they couldn't sell. So did a lot of other companies.

Smith and Wesson will be next.

I'm pretty sure I've read that their holding company is just shopping the market and that Savage isn't in dire straits just yet.

...But the conspiracy theories and rumor mill conjecture is fun too....

I like my Savage rifles... very accurate out of the box. I hope the quality and value remain (looking for a deer rifle for my son...might need to do this sooner rather than later)

When a company changes it's name they don't want to be primarily associated with the gun biz anymore. Smith and Wesson is now American Brands.

Dark days ahead. I expect they will have to buy out the Black Rock share holders to stay in business. Another huge financial drain on the company.

I've often wondered about that... the past few years Savage has all but given away their bolt action rifles, what I consider their main stock in trade. They build good rifles, I'm not sure why they are giving them away like that unless it's like you said... they have a warehouse full of them. I don't know why they got into the AR business, either... tooling up for what would be either a very short run (Hillary in '16 and another AWB, etc) or an instantly glutted market (Trump.)

Another company that came in late to the AR market was Springfield Armory. Real bad business decision.

Do we know that they did much tooling up? For all we know the Savage ARs are just as much “build guns” as all the Andersons on Armslist. All they needed to do was engrave a receiver and open some parts boxes to start making ARs.

Good point!

I’m really hoping for Taurus Holdings to pick it up. USA made r92 along with similar business plans...seems like a good fit.
Now that is the worst idea I've heard in a long time, take a company that makes truly quality rifles and turn it into a company that has one of the worst quality records in the business, no thanks on that

I’m lost... I didn’t even mention Remington. Taurus QC issues are typically tied to certain models, and everybody has major issues from time to time. Remember the S&W shield mess? How about an entire era of Kimber crapsmanship? Just looking at business models it seems a good fit. Everybody else that might be interested will probably be looking to do what Cerberus did to Marlin and Remington.

Here is a quote from the article and I don`t get this “use of social media to disseminate negative commentary and boycotts may adversely impact our business,” Now I know a few companies have quit selling AR 15`s and guns like the AR 15, but the rest of us and the pro gun world are still buying. If the anti gun crowd boycott's it is in name only because they are typically not gun buyers anyway. I don`t get the point in the above statement as a reason to sell Savage Arms.

You guys bashing REI as leftist snowflakes: It's a cooperative that is member-owned. The board is elected by members. You're sorting it out as leftist-only yourselves.

A man can dream. I'm not sure I'd sure if I'd do a collapsible stock but tac rails I could live with. Still would be nice to see one in 6.5 CM now that I hear at least some branches of military is considering it.
