Savage Mark II- standard vs. bull barrel

I have figured that my next gun purchase will be bolt action Savage Mk II. I have narrowed it down to too options...

The Savage Mk II with a standard barrel and wood furniture. $170-$200 depending on whether I special order it at Walmart or get it off the shelf at the local gunstore.

The Savage Mk II with a bull barrel and the target style iron sights. $300 at the local gunstore.

The main thing I want to know is whether the heavy barrel will be more accurate after the barrel heats up- the .22LR isn't exactly a cartridge that heats the barrel up a lot, but I want to know if the standard barrel will keep its accuracy through rapid shot strings. Adding good iron sights to the first option will bring its cost near the bull barrel model, so cost isn't the issue here.

I also want to know about the quality and features of the Savage target sights if you have the second model. Or, whether I should just go with the first model and buy a Williams foolproof sight with target knobs.
 
I would get a CZ first and I say this after buying the Savage MKII. It hasnt seen the light of day since I took it to the range. I shoot a Ruger 77/22 better but in your price range I would get a Marlin model 60 or a CZ. If you live near Kansas I would be happy to let you shoot my brand new MK II and my 77/22 to show you the difference.
 
I love my bull barrelled mark II. It is heavy enough to hold steady and that it doesnt feel like a toy. It is also plenty accurate to 50 yards for target shooting or 100yards if you are happy with minute of clay pigeon accuracy. It is great fun compensating for the couple inches of drop that a .22 has at 100yards by guestimating the holdover and adjusting the holdover based on the impact.

As for the bull barrel, yes, it should do better at staying cool than a thin tube since there is a lot more metal to heat up.
 
If you plan on humping around in the woods with it, get the sporter, if doing mostly plinking and benchresting, the bull bbl make s a big diff in heating up, and not moving groups.Also if this is pre accutrigger, it is so simple to do a trigger job on these, it is rediculous. I mean if you plan on keep multiple shot groups under 1 inch, for ext periods of time, then do the bull bbl.
 
Hey, I would love to get a CZ. Only problem is that I have not seen one in person. I am NOT special ordering one, to find out how I feel about the hogback stock. CZ needs to offer an american style stock/ two screw action rifle with their iron sights...

Thanks for the offer, doc2rn, but I'm in SC. I also don't want a Model 60 b/c I am looking for a good bolt action. I've already got a Ruger 10/22 for the semi-auto, and it shoots good.
 
If you get the newer MKII target it will come with the excellent Accutrigger, and heavy bbl. With a little break in it is capable of shooting with the best european models costing 2x what you would pay for the MKII. The one I own did not come with sights though. It was standard with 2 piece scope mounts.
 
I have had my sporter for about 6 years never benched (i didn't what a benchrest was when i got this rifle) I love it and have taken countless small game with this rifle team with a weaver 1.5-4.5 scope

I have the accutigger, bull bbl. Mark II. The only one I could find had the synthetic stock So I bought a thumbhole stock from Ross. It is very accurate. .4" at 50 yds. with Winchester T-22, a little larger with Wolf Target, and .6 to .7" with the cheap stuff.
 
My experience is the same as "doubleh".

I got a MkII BV (laminate stock and bull barrel). Now I wish I could get that new thumbhole stock, but no funds.

I bought it for silhouette matches, and it does the trick. One hole groups at 40m. I have a disadvantage in the matches though, the bull barrel rule puts me in the target class, even though it meets weight for hunter class, but the trigger is nowhere near what you can have with an Anshutz. Not that the trigger is bad... it is very good, but only goes down to 3#.
 
Well, I have not purchased the Savage (or any other .22 rifle, for that matter). (STILL haven't decided, either).

I'm pouring funds into an EBR. Either an AR-15 or an AK clone. I was like 6 years old when the first AWB went into effect. When the AWB expired in '04, I was still underage to purchase anything. Now that I am over 18 and have some money, I am going to purchase a nice EBR. The first AWB apparently wasn't so bad (I could have dealt w/o the "evil" features), but the magazine situation-paying outrageous prices for mags wouldn't have sat with me well.

So, before anything else, I am getting a nice EBR and plenty of magazines and ammo. Many are of the opinion that the politicians will not touch another AWB because of fear of loosing their elected positions, but I don't feel the same way. I'd rather take the precautions this year, before it is too late for me.

i have the sporter savage, and i see NO difference in accurary between mine and my friends bull-barrel at 50-75 yards , plus since its a bolt action, you don't shoot fast and long enough to heat up the barrel (10 round magazine)

on a side note: the drop of a .22 at 100 yards is 6 inches (feredal high velocity ammo) look at mine in my signature (my collection)
 
I bought that same rifle a few weeks ago (bull barrel, Williams peep sights). I've only been able to put 100 rounds through it on a 20-25yd indoor range so far, but I really like it as a iron-sight plinker. Groups were touching, but I was still trying to dial it in. I did, however, manage to lose the locking screw for the verticle sight the first time out...
 
Don't blame you, I bought an AK to keep the AR company in case either of the bad options gets elected.

I finally decided this afternoon. I picked up an LMT Defender lower, will get the LMT upper later. Going to be buying a couple of mags and some ammo each week, too.
