academy is selling savage model 12FVs' for a little more than $400!!! i realize this price is good but how good is it? i hear savages great rifles and usually sell for around $600:eek:

i have ben wanting to get into long range rifle shooting for a while and this seems like the perfect opertunity, only, the pamphlet advertises that it is only chambered for .204 ruger, 5.56 nato and 22-250.

what do you think?

Whoa!!

I paid $470 for mine!! That of course included a few boxes of ammo, back round check, and tax (9.25% in TN!) and that was used!!!
$420 is a great price, pitty about the caliber selection though. That's a tough choice. I would probably go with the 22-250 , but I've heard that 22-250 shoots out barrels a lot quicker than any other small caliber. I would stear very very clear of 204. A friend of mine has a Thompson contender in 204 and has all kinds of trouble getting control of that itty bitty bullet. You gotta have like a 1 in 7 twist and the 12FV is 1 in 9.
Anyway, go with whatever caliber you want, but just know that $420 is a great price!

I have one...

That is a great price.

Mine is in .223, I guess they discontinued that one.

The stock is a little flimsy for such a barrel but it works well enough to use a bipod. Mine is always as accurate as I can shoot it.

Colt,

What caliber are you wanting to join in the fun with? Savage 11/111F's are under $400 new right down the street from me. :neener:

the Savage website shows: 223 Rem, 22-250 Rem, 243 Win, 308 Win, 204 Ruger for the 12FV...

:p

i know that they come chambered in other calibers, but academy only sells select calibers.

Hmmm... The Academy here has all the catalogs from all the majors, Savage, Browning, Remington, etc... if it was in the respective catalog, they could order it... would require 50% down, and the balance upon delivery of the "special" order, but they don't up their prices for "special catalog orders"

:scrutiny:

if you dont care about ammo cost, get the 204 , and buy 40 grn bullets. higher b.c. less bbl wear than all other 22 centerfires. if bullet cost matters , get the 223 or 308. if you want an all around round, that woudl be the 243.

I have a Savage 10FP in .223 with a 20" barrel...setup with a harris bipod, 2.5lb trigger, Nikon scope it outshoots most anything out there...kinda thinking about getting one in .308, too. Highly recommend it to you as it also has the heavy barrel so heat has little effect on a days shoot. My .02 anyhow.

I've got a 12FV in .204 Ruger and it's a great rifle. Good price you have as well, I paid $459 almost 2 years ago for mine. If you like to varmint you'll like the .204 Ruger - it's very flat and very accurate.

The Savage is 1 in 12 twist for .204 and it shoots 40gr and 32gr bullets just fine. I consistently get 3/4" MOA with factory loads and 1/2" MOA with handloads.

Got my .22-250 12FV for $360, and it was a run that had blued fluted barrels. Figure in shipping costs and all, I still got into it for under 4 bills.
