I first posted this over in the rifle section but this might be the better place (didn't see it 'till now) so my appologies in advance for the cross posting.

Around 1947-1950 my father was given a Savage Model 19 NRA .22 target rifle by his parents. About 6 years ago he gave it to me. It was supossedly used by a national champion marksman but I have no clue if that's true or not. The best I can figure is that it was manufactured sometime between 1923 and 1933.

Does anyone know the history of these rifles? I'd like to find out as much as I can including a more approximate year when it was made. The SN is a 625xx.

I spoke to my father in greater detail about the rifle and he was able to narrow his purchase year down to 1952. The previous owner was supposedly the national iron sight champion and had modified the stock by drilling it out and adding weight. That would explain why the forward stock is missing the metal strap and little bullnose bump under the barrel.

I also discovered John Callahan listed on the Savage's website who might be able to research info: http://www.savagearms.com/cs_historical.htm

Anyone ever use him before and know how good the info is? I'm sure his services are probably not free...
 
Savage model 19NRA

I have the very same rifle.
Very nice gun and great shooter.

I need to get a couple of different rear sight apertures but I am not sure of the size of the threads and the length.

Do you know the thread pitch and length?

Savage Model 19 NRA Bolt Action

.22 LR, Approximately 50,000 manfactured 1919-1932.
(Blue Book of Gun Values, 29th ed.)

There is no further serial# sequence in this reference. It appears Mr. Callahan is the reference authority for Savage and Stevens products, and as such, would be the final authority on such matters. Generally, simple research (serialization) would not be over $50.

Different NRAs?

I've got a couple of Savage Model 19 NRA rifles and neither look like the guns pictured above. I wasn't aware there were Mdl. 19 NRAs wearing anything other than the musket type of full stock. Mine have exactly the same rear peep sight as well.

These are markings found on both of my guns.
 
The Gun Traders Guide describes the OP's rifle as the "Savage Model 19 bolt action target rifle", made 1933-46. Eight pounds.

The full military stocked version (I have owned one since the early 70's) as the Savage Model 19 NRA Bolt Action Match Rifle". Made 1919-33. Lighter at seven pounds.

One might conclude from this information that the sporter stock version is a later rendition of the earlier, military stocked version.

They appear to be similar in some ways. In the photos shown in this post, the peep sights appear different to me.
 
The 2007 Standard Catalog of Firearms, 17th Edition, lists:

Model 19 NRA
A .22 caliber bolt-action rifle with 25" barrel, detachable magazine and full-length military-style stock. Approximately 50,000 were manufactured total between 1919 and 1937.

I've NO idea where any of these references got their info from...

Same as my Savage model 19

My rifle looks exactly like yours. I have been trying to find a manual for it but no luck so far. My father gave it to me when I was around 12 years old, which was a long time ago. I am about ready to give it to my oldest child, who is now 33.
 
gtyoung, if you look again at Posting #4 above, that eparts URL is the place to check for a manual. I've gotten a couple from them on other guns and I was satisfied with what I got.

Wow, what a nice thread. I love these small bore target rifles and own several Remingtons and Winchesters.

Nice rifle eluwak. That is a real family treasure IMO.

My father-in-law just gave me one of these rifles. He used it for competitive shooting in the rifle club at the Colorado School of Mines in the early 1950's, so it's about the same age as me. It has the full military stock. S/N 258xx.
 
Savage Nra Mdl. 19 Sold

I just checked the results of the K&S auction I mentioned above. That rifle sold for $150. I guess I should have gone for a third one. WOW!
