Savage Sporter .25-20

I have an old savage sporter .25-20 of my grandfathers, its in good to very good shape. While I find it an interesting piece, ammo is hard to find and not to mention pricey. So I'm considering selling it, can anyone give me an idea of what to ask for it?

I'm gonna give you some advice my father gave me once.

Never sell a gun. if you have the gun, you can always sell it later, and you can get some enjoyment out of shooting it now. if you sell it now, you'll just have paper money and no gun.

my savage sporter has no model number on it,serial #547xx is in 25-20 win. also and is a fine shooter. i think the later number was a 23-B or C. i reload for all the old rifles i own and that realy keeps the amm cost down to a sane level. eastbank.

Yes its probably a model 23 B or C as the previous poster replied. If you reload ammo already I would simply start reloading for it. According to Shidelers Standard Book of Firearms 2010 one of these in Excellent condition is valued at only $250. You cant buy real wood (probably walnut) and steel for that too easy nowdays. I would keep it for its sentimental value too. Once they are sold thats it. I repeat keep it!

the 25-20 is a better killer than the .22 mag, i load 60gr bullets at 2200 fps and it is cheap to load for. i use 2400 powder and with the load i use you get over 700 loads per pound,primers 25-30 dollars a thousand and hornady 60gr bullets 15 dollars a hundred, and if you are like me when i go to gun shows i take a list of all the things i might need and that can cut you cost in half. i just bought two pounds of rl-25,one pound of rl 19, a 1000 federal 215 match primers, and 5 boxes(50 in a box) of 250 nosler HP 44 mag. bullets for the great sum of 70.00. as to value,i think in good shape the 300.00 you were offered is fair. i will not sell mine,but i tend to keep any guns i get. pay attention to the way you put the clip in as it can fall out if inserted wrong,eastbank.

I just checked the Widener's Reloading and Shooting Supply website and they did not have the Classic Lee Loader in stock in .25-20 which removed my temptation to make a bid. If one reloads, "old" calibers like .22 Hornet, .25-20 ,.32-20 are very useful (sometimes more versatile than the latest and greatest) for either small game hunting, varmint control or just target practice.

I also inherited an old Savage 25-20. The stock is quite beat up from use.
It does have an interesting history. It probably has not seen use since 1970 or so and I do have the clip.
I would be interested in selling but am not sure of the laws on selling rifles and on shipping them.
I could send a photo to anyone interested and give them a little more history of the rifle.

Great rifle, I wish I still had mine. Gave it to my brother as a gift, and he sold it. I still have 3 clips though, they appear to be rare. Note sure of their value, pretty good condition for being about 70 years old.
