Quick story for everyone.

A buddy of mine from my military days were going to get together and go golfing last Saturday. I didn't hear anything from him by late morning so I gave him a call on his cell phone. He didn't answer. I left him a voicemail and called back at around 4 pm. Still no answer. His wife was out of the state for the weekend. I called her cell phone and she told me that she hadn't heard from him all day. I called him again a 8pm and no answer. I started getting worried so I drove over to his house. When I got there, both of his trucks were in the driveway with the windows down. I noticed that the keys were on the seat in one of the trucks. I went up to the door and knocked. No answer. The lights were off but I noticed his wallet opened and empty on the table by the door. I checked and the door was open so I cracked it open and yelled his name. No response. His rottweiler came to the door and was whining and running in circles. At this point I am thinking something is really wrong here. I called his wife again and asked if she had heard from him. She said he went golfing with a buddy. I told her that I was the buddy and we never went golfing. She asked me to go in the house. I asked her if they owned any guns. She told me no. I knew they didn't but asked anyway. I went inside, still on the phone and yelled his name again. No response. I walked through the kitchen and into the garage and saw his golf clubs on the floor. I walked back in from the garage and yelled his name again. Still nothing. I was on my way out of the front door to call the police when I heard him yell from upstairs. He was ok. Turns out he didn't feel well and was sleeping.

Everything turned out ok. Maybe I'm a bit paranoid, but everything seemed out of place. I felt stupid for the whole thing. Looking back, I should have called the police and let them walk through the house.

Ahhhh...end of long boring story.

I think you did just what I would have , If he would have been hurt in some way calling the police would have taken longer,

No reason to feel stupid. I think most people would have done the same thing for a good friend. I'd have given him hell for not at least calling. One would have to be about near death to not be able to make a phone call to bail on a prearranged meeting with a bud.

I would have done the same thing. I'd give him hell too. It better be at least some sort of "I've fallen and can't get up" reason for not answering the phone or calling! He must be trusting to leave his keys in his rig, wallet by the door, and house unlocked!

Good to check that A) you weren't going to get shot, and B), the dog knew you.
I had a similar experiance with a buddy who owned a gun shop/house, and didn't answer the private phone, business phone, or the door, and there had been a rash of gun shop burglaries lately. I called PD, and told them to go in behind me as I turned off the alarms, (yes, I had the codes, worked there occaisonally for ammo). The police wondered why I asked them to be behind me, and I told them that John usually came out of sleep with an AK in hand, especially for people he didn't know. He was sick as a dog, and all was otherwise well, but a certain street cop was slightly shaken, and vowed to call me if there was ever an alarm at that shop!
Shop is now an empty lot, and John has passed on, unfortunately.
You did a good thing, sir, and good friends are hard to find. Sounds like he owes you a barbeque.

If the Rottie didn't know me, there isn't any way I would go in the house. I'd be her lunch.

Sounds like you felt you were doing the right thing by your friend. Wasn't like you just ran over and busted down his door for not answering his phone. You contacted his wife, took in the surroundings, and decided your gut was telling you your friend might be in danger. I also would rather have a friend find me deathly ill or injured rather than the police.

He must be trusting to leave his keys in his rig, wallet by the door, and house unlocked!

or damn sick.

I'd hope any friend of mine would do the same. Sounds a lot more like brown bottle flu from celebrating the absence of the wife? The way stuff was laid out, keys in the car seat, wallet open and "empty"......hmmm, fun night at the nudey bar? ;)

You did noting to warrant feeling stupid. I however would have called 911. It's their job to clear a house, not yours.

I'm no doctor, but I would say that his symptoms are consistent with your diagnosis.

I think you made the right call not calling the police until you walked around. As was said previously, I would much rather have a friend in my house than an LEO.

You did good to check on him. My friend has a neighbor, two doors up the street. Neighbors noticed his papers collecting in the drive for two days so they checked on him. He had fallen in the bathroom and layed in the floor for two days. You wouldn't want your friend to go through that...so you checked on him. Good for you...and good for him...he has a friend in you.

Mark.
