• Possible Downtime Alert

I am working to migrate THR from the current cluster to a new one. I would like to get this done before the weekend, but it's unclear what the timeframe will be, as testing is still ongoing. As I am writing this the new (rebuilt) host is doing a burn-in to ensure that everything will keep running under load.

When the migration happens users will see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. This is expected, and depending on how the migration goes this may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours - I won't know more until testing the various migration options is complete and I have finalized the plan.

More information is available in this thread.

As always, thanks so much for your patience.

SCCY is dead

Brother in law had a cpx-something. After a few shots, the safety would migrate itself to the on position. He didn’t have it long.

Here's a photo of the tax seal:

Buddy had one, had problems, sent it back, returned fixed.
Perhaps good customer service isn't sustainable in this day and age.

I had one, a CPX-2 that had problems in its first three days, sent it back, it returned fixed. Broke again (same problem) a week later. I sent it back, it returned fixed. Again. Repeated that cycle a third time, same outcome. Sent it back, told them to keep it.

Customer service is great. Without a quality product, not so much.

3 years ago, a 22oz loaded, 10+1, 9mm selling for under $250 was a competitive product.

But 1 year ago I could buy a 22oz loaded, 12+1(24oz loaded 15+1), much thinner, 9mm Keltec for $220.

And in another year you'll be able to buy a 18oz loaded, 20+1, very thin, 5.7x28 Keltec for close to $200.

SCCY had a great marketing idea with the plethora of skins. Problem was though that it was impossible for a dealer to stock all of them. The design should've been a schema that shipped a vanilla gun with cheap skins available for customization.

And lastly, Concealed Carry isn't a the market driver that some would think - little pistols chambered in 9mm are hard for noobs to learn.

IMHO of course.

This. Never thought the P365 was too bad, especially with standard pressure loads. But hot loads, in small, light guns...well, the laws of physics don't take a day off. The LCP has the same issue in the .380. The damned things always work, but they are miserable, hard kicking little stinkers to shoot much.
The Ti cylindered Smiths are more of the same.

I feel sorry for the owners and employees of SCCY, but frankly I have never had any interest in any of their products and won't miss them when they are gone.

SCCY is not likely a viable business any longer even if they find a way to pay what they owe and continue offering product. What's much more likely is bankruptcy, with the non-cash assets sold off real cheap to someone who specializes. Any spare parts might wind up for sale as spare parts kits. Myself I'd not bother spending anything on spare parts for a dead platform. I'd rather replace with something likely to be supported.

What probably really killed them was cheap but way better quality supported small handguns in the same space. From the likes of Ruger, Springfield, PSA.

Wen I came back to shooting after twenty-five years chasing little green fish, one of the first guns I bought was a Kel-Tec P-11. I liked the gun, but it kicked hard enough to make my arm tingle for a day or two afterwards if I went past 50 rounds or so. I eventually sold that gun, but later bought a SCCY 9mm that was basically the same gun. It kicked the same too. Not a bad shooter for what it cost and what it was made for though. I got the SCCY used just for grins and giggles really, to see if they were as "bad" as internet lore said they were. It worked pretty well really. One of the magazines that came with the gun wouldn't lock the slide back on the last round. SCCY sent me a new magazine. Pretty good service on a used gun I thought. The new one worked by the way.

You know, if you came right down to it, that SCCY, or the original P-11 was probably all the gun I ever "needed". That of course didn't stop me from buying and trying just about everything out there at one time or another, but for a guy who just "needed" a gun to carry, "just in case" they did the job.

Don’t think I ever touched one. Read numerous issues about frames cracking once upon a time so never game them a second thought.

I hate to see any gun mfg close. I bought a couple CPX-2 a few years ago when Rural King had a good sale, I think they were under $200. They've been fine for the purpose I got them for, but never was anything I'd edc. Later I also bought a Taurus G3C and a Ruger EC9s for about the same price. For edc the Ruger wins by far and the G3C isn't bad. For the same money the SCCY just didn't compare.

In the beginning, they were known as Skyy. Changed name so as to not have to pay rights to vodka company. First runs were a little problematic, quality wise. In our first shipment we got a couple missing a critical feature, rifling.
Over the next ten years, quality improved. I passed on using my employee discount and bought Ruger.

They're customer service was great. I had to send one of my CPX-2 back when the mag release button came off. They sent a shipping label and It was back within two weeks. No problem since. I wish Ruger and Smith & Wesson had that kind of service, no reason they couldn't.

I've owned and carried a SCCY for years, and shot it a lot. Never a problem. I just decided a week ago to take it to the local gun show this coming weekend to sell. Not because it has any issues, but I'm too deep in 9mm handguns, so it and my old Kahr E9 are both going away. I'm going back to carrying my S&W 39 instead.
Sad the folks running the company would not pay property taxes and put the company in jeopardy.

Maybe the stress was too much for Joe Roebuck and he slipped up. One year, I forgot to pay my franchise tax in Texas. They fined me $50 :) Didn't make that mistake again thus far.
