School me about the S&W 1006...fair price? Weak spots? Parts availability?

Hello everyone..

One of the gun shops where I regularly go told me that they may have a very good used S&W 1006 coming in next week.

I have a soft spot for the 10 mm Auto but unfortunately I cannot find the right pistol I want in that chambering...full metal, DA/SA, double stack magazine capable to fire full house 10 mm Auto without cracking and with good Customer Service in case of need..

The Vltor Fortis should hit the market this Christmas but I do not want to jump on the wagon too soon..I want to wait 1 or 2 years to see how the pistol does and how the CS is.

With the 1006 I would not get the double stack magazine but it has all the remaining requisites.

So I need to know:

1) What is the fair price request for a 1006 in good conditions??

2) How is parts availability including magazines??? Is the pistol still officially supported by S&W?? I noticed that Midwayusa is out of stock for magazines and no backoorder possibility...there are any after market magazines out there?? Any after market bigger capacity than 9 rounds??

3) What are the sensitive areas/weak spot I have to look for?? Any particular series that I should avoid?? I heard that they are built like tanks and they are the toughest 10 mm pistols out there, better than the Colt Delta Elite (the DE had problem with frame cracking)...what is your take on that?? Is it true??

4) Is the 1006 capable to fire full specs 10 mm Auto without any problem whatsoever?? A decent diet of Double Tap, Buffalo Bore or Corbon is going to hurt it?? I do not want to use the pistol for target purpose regularly (I have other pistols for that) but once in a while have fun with full spec loads and keep the pistol on my side for "light" wildlife defense duty.

5) I plan to trade it later on if the Fortis turn out to be a good pistol, however I may keep it if the collector value is going to increase significantly in the future...do you think there is any chance of that??

I can't answer all your questions, but I can tell you a little about my experiences with the 1006...

First, I don't have a clue how much a 1006 is worth today. Probably your best bet is to see if you can find one on one of the auction sites. Secondly, I don't know anything about spare parts or magazines, since I've never needed to replace anything and I've still got the original two magazines it came with. Numrich is usually a pretty good source for parts, however. Third, I don't know of any weaknesses in the gun; mine has functioned perfectly in the 20 years I've owned it. Finally, I don't have any idea about the 1006 as a collector's item; my suspicion is that it's not sufficiently unique to be much sought after by collectors.

I can tell you that it will definitely handle any 10mm load you can throw at it. I see very little reason to reduce the load on a 10mm (you just turn it into a .40S&W), so my gun's relatively steady diet has been full power 180 grain handloads. I don't shoot it that much, but it's never once hiccuped on me.

1----A 1006 in very , very good condition is selling for between $500/$650 ---- the higher priced ones will also have extra mags , holster , ammo , ast. small parts etc.


2 --- Parts should not be a big problem -- S&W and some parts places like Numrich , Brownells , etc will have MOST of what you'd need.

3 -- They are built VERY WELL and should last you MANY THOUSANDS of rounds. As to the Colt DE frame cracking -- that was only ON SOME and they were all the early DEs , before COlt made the "cut out " on the later Deltas.

4 -- see 3 above.


5 --- They have held steady at $500/$600 for the last 5 years or so ---- however , I really don't see them going up from there any time soon.

I used my two Colt Delta Elites for IPSC competition from about 1985 to 1993 -- then I went to the .38 Super. Both my "Unlimited" and my "Limited/Stock" has over 20,000 reloads thru them --- 175/180gr. RNL at about 1150fps. ---- this was when IPSC had a Power Factor of 170/175.


If you can snag it for $500 or so ---- GRAB IT !!!

Some background info:

the 1006 and 1076 are the #1 and #2 most common S&W 1000 series pistols. One model(1046?) only had about 150 pistols produced. There are 6 different models in the 1000 series. 1006, 1026, 1046, 1066, 1076 and the 1086. theres basically 3 different kinds of action/options and each has a full size and a compact(4.25" barrel) size. 1) a decent 1006 or 1076 will run ~$600. The ones in better condition will go for ~$700. The models that are more rare will fetch a higher price.

Personally, i got a steal on my 1006. I bought it from a Latah County sheriff who was in Boise for training. It had ~200 rounds through it in the 14 years he owned it(made in '94). He included 6 total magazines and hogue grips. I paid $500 for everything.

2)Magazines usually cost ~$40 a piece and as far as i know, no high capacity ones are available as they are single stack. And IIRC, most of the internal parts are similar to the 4000 series pistols so they might be interchangeable. Dont quote me on that though.

3) they are the toughest 10mm pistol out there IMO. I have yet to hear of or see one KB.

4) I probably have ~600 total rounds through the gun, most of which have been almost full power reloads. The gun works like a champ and is very smooth.

5) Prices have gone up and down over the years. Most of that is just supply and demand. they havent been manufactured for over a decade now, so the demand is there, it just depends on how many people are selling them at a given time.

I would never get rid of mine, even if i bought a "better" pistol in 10mm. It has served me so well and has been 100% reliable that i just couldnt do that. Plus i would always kick myself in the as* for getting rid of a pistol ive wanted for so long and by luck(thanks to one of the board members pointing the ad out) happened to get a steal on.

Just bought a 1006 at a GS for $550 in great condition. Recoil is mild compared to my XD40 sub compact. Love it!!!

I had 1076 for a while. Hated the Sig like decocker lever, but the thing shot
like crazy. Fed every load I could stuff into it and asked for more!

Sold it for a lot more than I bought it for a year later.

IF you can land any Smith 10 for less than $700. Go for it!
