Hello everybody,
For my contemporary issues class we have to do a 20 minute presentation on a political issue in America today. I have chosen to present the truth about gun ownership and the spin by the liberal media. Today was our first day to work on it at school, and as I expected, all the websites I had found in the past that displayed information pertinent to my presentation were blocked by the commies that run the school. The only thing I could access was the brady campaign website and the U.N. statistics. Does anybody have any web sites with statistics that aren't based on twisted words and hot air (read: not the U.N. or brady campaign)?

Thanks folks,

Are you in China? Seriously, how is your school run by communists? Do they advocate the state owning everything? I think it is silly to assume that someone who you suspect of being anti-gun is a communist. That is like assuming that someone who is pro-gun is a racist. It is simply not true.

But all in all I would suggest you check out a few books by John Lott. He is an academic who writes about gun issues and is pro-gun, but he is not a racist.

Oh and don't pull any stats from Gunfacts or NRA websites as those can be construed as just as biased as the Brady Campaign. I don't believe the UN to be a biased organization but that is me. I would suggest government documents. Perhaps you should start with the Department of Justice?

There was also a study done by the people at Harvard on this issue that may be a good place to look as well. Check out these links listed below. Both come from what would be considered non biased groups.

You said that many web sights were blocked. Where do you go to school. I go to a public University and get on pro gun web sights all day.

FWIU the FBI and CDC also have published statistics that contradict the Brady Bunch hype.

I would advide against making the point of your paper the ways in which "liberal media" distort gun facts. You'll immediately alienate anyone who considers themselves liberal.

Instead, I would focus on general misunderstanding of firearms in the media, the misconceptions among the general public, and the discredited studies that breed some of those misconceptions, like the Kellerman study.

If you have time, see if a local library has books by Gary Kleck or co-authored by him. They will give you what you need. Also, his book Point Blank - won a criminology award so he is considered legit as a scholar.

If you can, a university library can give you access to the criminology data bases that have lots of stuff.

Bernie Goldberg has written about media bias. He uses defensive use of firearms as an example.

Take the perspective of some hard-core liberals to persuade the liberals:

Why Liberals Should Love the 2nd Amendment

and

"Assault Rifle" primer for the gun-world impaired

"Technically, a vast majority of what people call "assault rifles" aren't technically assault rifles at all..."

That's straight from the liberals' mouth, believe it or not.

My liberal-minded associates will never give much creedence to a pro-gun argument from a right wing nut job like me. So I always point them to the two above Daily Kos articles.
