Fellow High Roaders, Can any of you help me find colleges and universities that have shooting teams. Skeet, trap, pistol, rifle, whatever. My kids are coming up on college age and I would like to know which schools have teams. Biathlon would be good also.

Thanks for your help.

MIT and Ohio State University. Also one of the colleges in Utah.

Purdue has a pretty good extracurricular club for rifle and pistol, as well as a trap and skeet club.

One of the club officers for the Purdue club posts here under the name Wiry Irishman, so you might shoot him a message.

I'm the captain of the Purdue University pistol team. We have a rifle team as well. Both are offshoots of the Purdue University Rifle and Pistol club, we have no school funding or NCAA association. The teams do compete with NCAA teams, though. Purdue also has a Trap And Skeet club and team, also student-run. I don't know much about them except for they have an awesome facility and are apparently very good and nationally competitive.

Schools we compete against that have shooting teams of some sort:

Ohio State
Rose-Hulman (IN)
Grand Valley State University (MI) (Don't send your kids there if you want them to have a quality education)

...

There's more, I know, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. I'll go ask around the club officers and then get back to you. PM me if I forget.

Don't hesitate to do so.

Siderite and Thrash 1982 are THR members involved with the PRPC. Chris Rhines and Ian were very involved, but are alumni now.

I know there's several more that at least read THR, but I don't know their THR names offhand.

Penn State has a rifle team but its a club sport. They have a 50 ft indoor range and they shoot smallbore and air rifle.

Thanks every body, so far it seems to be all rifle if NCAA or pistol if its clubs. Any shot gun sports out there?

Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, OH used to have a club of trapshooters. However, since the range they shot at closed last year, I don't know what became of them.

I will give your kids the same advise I give every prospective college student who asks. Figure out what you want to major in, find a school that has a reputable program for that major, and go to that college.

Pistol only competes against Ohio State and our own ROTC, but that's changing next year.

Texas A&M University
Sam Houston State University. They had a rifle and pistol team(smallbore and air rifle) when I attended there (I graduated in '96), at that time I believe they were nationally ranked and placed well against the service academies.

Just my .02,

In my type of school, the only shooting teams that are allowed to form are unauthorized solo operations :uhoh:

Here at UW the student regulations explicitly excludes any type of firearms club, even airsoft. If the main activity of the club is not something allowed on campus, the club cannot be formed. There was an officially school sanctioned amateur porn club; but to shoot guns, now that would just be insanely immoral wouldn't it?

I'm moving to Ohio for Law school next year, and looked into whether or not any firearms clubs or shooting teams existed at that school as well, and I have confirmed that their aren't any school sanctioned ones, to be sure.

Well I guess we do have an ROTC competition program, much to the chagrin of the school officials.

Michigan State University has air rifle for sure - I believe we have smallbore rifle and air pistol as well, not entirely certain. They're all under the control of our wonderful Marksmanship Club, of which I'm a member.

Oh..... wait.... did I forget to mention something?

I think I might have.....

Texas A&M has a Trap and Skeet team, as well as a pistol team that does Standard pistol, Air, and Free. I'm on the pistol team. :)

And you should see the gun room on campus. Has some amazing pieces from turn of the century and wild west.

Illinois state university has a trap and skeet club, which is struggling - I am the pres and cannot for the life of me garner enough interest to make it worth while - I have tried advertising in the school paper, on facebook, and set up a booth at the student involvement fair. I am afraid that it may die upon my graduation.

ISU also has its "Red Rifles", a small bore rifle team that I believe is affiliated with its Army ROTC program.
