So one of my favorite YouTubers Brian from Survival on purpose did his take on his three favorite anti zombie weapons. I'm not usually much for those kinds of videos but I like him so I watched it. I didn't think much of the spear but the Schrade machete sword was really neat looking.

I'm not sure it's really useful for anything but it just looks Nifty to me. It looks to me to be about the length of a typical Gladius but has a somewhat curved blade shape to it with some extra blade upfront that makes me think it would chop pretty good.

Every once in awhile I see something that has no use in the real world but almost buy it just because it's neat looking.

Have a link to the video or the item, or do you want us to google it for ourselves? ;)

I googled it. The sword is the Schrade Priscilla Machete Sword, which looks like a Kopis rather than a Gladius.

I would share the link, but I can't figure out to post it without Xenforo overriding me and embedding the video here.

I am not real good at figuring out how to link from my phone. That is the Beast though!

3Cr13 stainless?

Umm, no, not without knowing it has a good heat treat for cutlery and the QC to get them all there reliably.

The bolo design should perform well for light chopping as a couple of video reviews indicate. They appear to have gotten the grind right.

Coating stainless is one of those odd habit tactikewl knife makers have gotten into and typically leads to wear and/or performance issues. Only use will tell how the coating on that machete will hold up.

Truth be told I'm concerned about anyone making a machete-type cutting tool for chopping out of stainless steel of any kind.

Cold Steel also makes machetes now that are patterned after some popular sword designs if that is your thing. I have the old katana and the new version of it. The new one is the better of the 2. Also, have the Thai sword, pass on that one since the round handle turns in your hand every time it hits anything. There are several others, the Gladius is also a good one.

Why does stainless steel concern you in such applications?

Stainless steel is noticeably more brittle in long blades regardless of heat treat. It doesn't matter much for most cutlery, since most knives aren't long enough for the mechanical forces exerted upon them to make a noticeable difference, but once you get into larger blades like machetes or swords, carbon steel blades will flex and return to true. When long carbon steel blades are over flexed, they'll warp, but treating a stainless blade of the same size the same way will cause it to break. I believe this is because the >12% chromium that makes an alloy stainless means a blade will have high percentages of chromium carbides, which are very large at the molecular level compared to the rest of the alloy and therefore a source of structural weakness in the steel grain. Again, not really noticeable for most knives, but...

...you'd be hard pressed to find a reputable smith or manufacturer making quality swords, machetes, or axes out of anything but carbon steel or non-stainless tool steel.

Offhand I can't actually think of a cutting tool I'd consider of good quality with a blade longer than 7" that's made of stainless.
