Is there a good online FAQ or reference that explains choosing a rifle scope? I plan on getting .308 bolt action sometime, but need more info on how to choose a scope, more specifically, what magnifications i should look into (field of view, etc).

Kind of militaristic, but a good article from SC goes over scope variables. Might be some other pages out there..this is the first one that came to mind.

Your choice is governed to a certain degree by what you intend to do with your rifle. Hunters usually go with a low power / variable, while benchresters use scopes with magnifications of up to 36X. My .308 VS has a 10X fixed, which has provided excellent service out to 1K. Scope power is a trade off... higher magnification will give you more control for targets but kill you with mirage and a low FOV if you're hunting.

Bunch of other considerations, not the least of which is price. I think a search here and TFL is in order. It'll give you alot more info for your decision.

Bench rest shooting mostly. 100-200 yards mainly. But I want it flexible so I can use it for longer distances.

Since most target shooting is done in conditions of good lighting, ultra-super light transmission is of lesser importance. Repeatability of adjustments of the crosshairs is one of the top priorities.

For a while I had a Bushmaster match target with a Tasco 6x24x40. The ability for my old tired eyes to easily see .22 bullet holes at 100 yards was quite helpful.

I don't think I would worry about tapered mounts for "way out there" shooting until your satisfied with your proficiency at the 200 yard distance...
