Good evening,

I’m looking for some opinions/advice on a scope for a .458 i just bought. It’s an interarms mauser in .458 win. What scope would you buy with $1000, and with $1500. I like good glass, and have mostly stuck with Swarovski binoculars and my favorite scope is a z5, but the only 1x scope they have goes a little above my budget and i want a scope that goes down to one or 1.5 power or so for a potential dangerous game hunt.

Thanks,
Ben

I have a older 1x4 verx11 leupold scope on a Winchester timber carbine(very light) in 444 marlin and shoot 265gr bullets at 2000 fps. its not a 458, but it sure kicks like one and the scope has not caused one problem after years of use. eastbank.

I have a 458 Lott and had one of the lower end Leupold scopes on it for awhile with no problem. I've never shot a 458 Winchester Magnum but I can attest that 458 Lott recoil is a lott (yes, I had to do that) more than my 444 Marlin handgun. I took the Leupold scope off my 458 Lott because it didn't have enough internal adjustment to use with both 350 and 500 grain bullets in my rifle. I now have a Nightforce scope on it but they don't go down to the 1.5X that you want.

I've broken several scopes including a couple of Leupolds (fixed by Leupold at no charge) on my heavy recoiling handguns but I don't think you would run into that problem with a rifle. You might try one of their shotgun or muzzleloader scopes. Also consider eBay; Leupold's warranty is good even if you buy your scope used.

Any idea where to find that Leica? I looked on eBay and found nothing. They look discontinued. Also thanks for the leupold warranty issue. I didn’t realize it was that good.

Leica has them on their website: https://us.leica-camera.com/Sport-Optics-Old-2/Leica-Hunting/Riflescopes/Leica-ER-5/Range, you could call them and ask.

I wouldn’t worry about Burris being tough enough to handle recoil. I wouldn’t want a scope as busy as the one referenced by Sunray though on a DG rifle. The exposed turrets would be a no-no for me and I’d want a simpler reticle. If it were me another option would be a Leupold VX-R 1.25-4x20 and have their Custom Shop install a Firedot 4 reticle.
