Greetings, I am new to the site and I guess my first post will be a question for anyone that might have any experience with this issue so, I'll just get it over with.

I have a Steyr SSG 69 PII that oddly enough has the iron sights found on the PI version of the rifle, and I am upgrading the optics to something more target shooting oriented than what was on the rifle before. I am using the 30mm Steyr rings that were supplied with the rifle to mount the new optic if I order it.

I considered scopes from both Leupold and Nightforce, and in the end I feel the optics in the Nightforce are quite a bit better to my eyes even given the higher unit cost of the glass. The problem is I don't know if the 3.5-15X50 NXS will be so long that it hits the rear iron sight before I can get proper eye relief. The NXS is longer than the comparable Leupold by a good 2 inches, but I was not able to compare the two side by side so I don't know with one is more forgiving with eye relief.

The last scope the rifle wore was a Leupold 2.5-8X36 VX III which had plenty of room ahead of it, but has so much eye relief that it was mounted as far forward as the rings would allow. I am afraid that the Nighforce might pose the same issue and end up making me remove the rear sight. The problem is I really like the iron sights on the rifle they are really pretty well made and I use them.

Has anyone mounted a Nightforce to an SSG PI? Did it work, or am I stuck with the Leupold or taking my irons sights off?

Unfortunately there may be only three people on the planet that have mounted a Nightforce scope on a P1, and it's doubtful any of them are here. The only way to know is to try it, if it doesn't fit return and try something else. I've seen a 4.5-14 Burris mounted on a P1, so many other options should work.

I know the 4.5-14X50 Leupold will fit with no issues, but the glass in that NXS was much better.

It just happens that the shop that had it in stock was unwilling to come down on the price (to compensate for paying 6% sales tax) and Creedmoor sports has a deal going right now on NXS scopes. Buy a scope, get a $75 gift card, which is pretty handy because I'm going to order a shooting jacket from them anyway. So I will save $85.50 in sales tax, and net out a $75 basic shooting jacket. It's a no-brainer for me. Except the fitment issue.

So I guess I will be the 4th person on the planet to try and accomplish this feat!

Well the 3.5-15X50 NXS fits pretty handily on an SSG 69. It is a little on the large side, but the glass is really good and the adjustments track perfectly.

With 175gr match kings over 44.5grs of RL15 the combination put ten rounds in under an inch (center to center) with seven of them going into a ragged hole measuring less than .4. This was at 100 yards establishing my zero.

I am satisfied. Now I just need to get a good final chronograph on the load and make my come up cards.
