Picked up a Hartford lever action rifle in .45 LC. I was wondering what's the best way to 'scope' this rifle. It's got a hexagon barrel, no tapped holes anywhere.

I guess maybe one would not normally put a scope of a rifle of this type, but my eyes insist !! :)

Weaver makes see-through rings that ought to work , I have an 1894s that I put a Simmons shotgun scope on. 40319353.jpg

Did your rifle come with tapped holes for mounting the rings ? Looks like that's what I'm going to have to do with the Hartford Model 1892.

Took it out to the range yesterday for the first time and it shoots great. But, I did verify that my eyes are not good with iron sights past 100 yards.

At least the rifle worked. I also took a Taurus Gaucho out for the first time and all it did was go "click", no "bang". Looks like a soft mainspring.

Ken, is your rifle a replica of the Winchester 1892 or the 1873? In either case I'm sure that there's some way for it to be done, but the specifics would be radically different depending upon which it is. With enough cash and a bit of ingenuity, a great deal is possible.

The most 'authentic' looking (stretching the term, I know) outfit I ever saw on a '73 replica was one that I believe was made for a replica Henry. It had old-style W&E adjustable rings and a looong brass scope tube that ran almost the entire length from receiver to muzzle. Couldn't have been cheap, but it looked a lot less anachronistic than anything else would've.

The mount was made for a hexagonal barrel of very similar dimensions, and required that two 'blind' holes be located, drilled and tapped for each base. I can't recall exactly how many were needed, but it was more than two, I'm sure.

If how it looks isn't so much of a concern, I'm sure that there are side-mount and 'Scout' type bases that could be adapted to either design. Your best bet is to find a knowledgable professional 'smith in your area and discuss the project with him. With their knowledge and experience to draw on, I'm sure that you can come up with a combo that is will fit your tastes and budget.

Yea, looks like it will require a trip to the gunsmith. Hell, might be cheaper to get my eyes fixed, lazer is getting cheaper all the time !! :)
