I have a dilemma and I thought I would ask for some help. I just bought and installed a Fulton Armory scout scope on my M1 Garand. I wanted to turn it into a bit more of a hunting/shooting rifle. The mount clamps onto the barrel solidly with no modification.

I tried it out today with my EOTech red dot sight and it groups pretty good and seems to be very solid and stable. The first couple shots were within an inch of the bulls eye at 25 yards though I needed a little adjustment at 100 yards. It seemed to group well for what I was doing. The only issue is the mount gets pretty hot along with the barrel. I took off the EOTech when I was done as it was pretty warm also. I don't think I want to stay with a red dot. The problem is I have no idea what to get for a scope. I am sort of assuming scope rings won't transmit the heat as badly.

QUESTION: What is a good scout scope to get for an M1 Garand? What is a good magnification? I was thinking either 4X or 6X. Is 6X too much? Leupold has an FX-II series that might work with a 4" eye relief though that would seem to put the eye relief point right at the back of the receiver. I saw a few others with lower magnifications. Money is not a big issue if it works well, but I can't go overboard.

I was hoping some of you had experimented with scout scopes on bolt guns and such. I figure the eye relief and such shouldn't be all that much different.

Scout scopes do not work well at high magnifications, due to the small field of view. Most scout scopes are between 2x and 3x as a result. I have the Burris 2.75x and Leupold 2.5x scout scopes on a couple of Marlin leverguns and like both of them pretty well. The Burris has an adjustable ocular, and that's a nice touch that the Leupold doesn't offer.

Having said that - many of my scout rifles actually wear a 2x Aimpoint 9000 series with a 2MOA dot. It mounts low, doesn't weigh too much, has wonderful reliability and battery life, I love the red dot as a scout reticle, and in general does exactly what I need in a low-power optic. Midway USA has been selling them occasionally for about $250, for the last year or so.

I've used the Leupold Scout Scope, 2.5X power on my Garand along with the Medesa forward mount. I have the Burris Scout Scope on another rifle. The Leupold is brighter than the Burris.

Thanks for the replies. That Aimpoint with magnifier looks like a good option assuming I can get near that price. Currently Midway shows them at $400 and out of stock. We'll see.
