Unfortunately, the only place that I can store my SD weapon is in my master bathroom, due to the construction style of my house. No closets, and almost no drawer space. What steps should I take to prevent corrosion, yet be prepared? Thanks for the help. - Steve

Get a stainless weapon. A Marinecote Mossberg 500/590 would also do the trick.

If that's not an option, spray it down with your favourite gun oil once a week and check for rust specks every time you do it. Just don't forget to wipe off the excess inside the chamber and barrel.

If it's your SD gun it should be on your hip till bed time then sitting on your night stand.

I keep a baby Glock and a few spare mags in as a backup SD gun in my master bath I just keep it inside of towel on the towel rack. Keeps it nice and dry and it's not a common place for someone to look. I've never had any rust or corrosion issues with it either.

What Bennyb said. I have a cheap-o .22 in the bathroom and I leave it on the toilet tank with a wash rag over it and it's never oxidized at all. A covering keeps condensation off.

Addendum: It's a zinc .22 called "The Regent." I got it very, very cheaply and I figured that the zinc wouldn't rust as much as steel. It's on the toilet tank so I can get to it while in the shower. I have no kids in the house so it's safe where it is.

As moisture is bad for weapons, I'd stop taking showers.

If the only place you can find to keep something as small as a pistol is your bathroom then where do you keep the rest of your stuff?

That is, unless your SD gun is a GAU-8. Then I'd just say that your bathroom is probably too big.

Why not tape it to the underside of your toilet? It worked for Michael Corleone.

But seriously, why don't you buy a gun box that can be bolted to the floor or your bed?

I do the towel thing. Just have to keep it on the bottom so the wife doesn't grab it.

Minisafes make wonderful carrying cases for burglars.

I do not normally store a weapon in the bathroom. Internal parts and barrel corrosion would be guaranteed from the ambient moisture following a long, hot shower. I just carry my 1911A1 into the can when I must TAD. I have to admit I'm pretty vulnerable in the shower, as I do not carry there. Of course if I have company and we aren't showering together, she can stand watch.

I've seen those wall mounted safe/lockers that you install inbetween the studs in your wall. I've considered those. THey have a key combo device to access the gun.
I've also kept a gun in the towel drawer. I've never had any condensation problems. As long as you run your vent fan or have a dehumidifier running, I don't see the problem.
I've thought of this alot. What do you do if you have a home invasion while you're in the shower??? You can't exactly tell the crooks to "hold on" while you get some cloths on.:p I especially worry about my wife being home alone in this scenario. I've lost count how many times I've come home unanounced and she's in the shower and hears me walking around the house. She calls out my name all scared "Is that you?" We keep guns accessible in almost every room in our home, but the bathroom was overlooked. So I figured I'd put one in there just in case we get broken into while we're either on the pot or in shower. Oh yeah, and keep your bathroom door locked, even if you're alone, it'll buy a few seconds so that you can get out of the shower and go for your firearm should the need arise.

One possibility is to find a gun that you don't care about and then see how much it degrades in your chosen hiding place.

Here's my sacrificial lamb: a clapped out RG-38 (Let's see if this works:

Do you have a floor? I'd rather have my HD gun on the floor next to my bed than in the next room.

There must be something I'm missing... Why do you need to "store" the gun in the first place?

The answer here is chamber pots. You can have your wife or male life partner cover you while you dispose of the contents. This way you won't get cornered in the bathroom. Showering? Forget it. You never want to take your clothes off voluntarily.
